DISCUSSION: Books to Movies

Book to movies for readers are a love hate thing. We want to see our characters come to life, but we hate when they destroy the book in the process.

What is your favorite book to movie?

What was the worse?

What would you like to see turned into a movie?

Which movie stayed true to the book?

What is your favorite book to movie?
The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Roots by Alex Haley and Waiting to Exhale by Terry McMillan are three of my favorites.

What was the worse?
I can't think of any offhand but I might be back to answer this once I've had time to think.

What would you like to see turned into a movie?
Any one of my books--but especially My Invisible Husband or Paige's Web.
I would also love to see some of Kimberla Lawson Roby's Curtis Black books made into movies.

Which movie stayed true to the book?I could pick any one of Stephen King's movies. They are true to form.

I've seen a few movies made out of Danielle Steele's books. I wasn't so much disappointed in the movie, though they did drag a little, but I was disappointed in the direction and the acting.

I think a good book to movie can be spoiled by poor directing and acting.

(I will admit that I'm not a huge Steele fan, but I admire her long career and ability to cross medias.)

Favorite Book to Movie: Disappearing Acts by Terri McMillan

The Worse: I thought the movie Diary of A Mad Black Woman was better than the book

Books to Movies: The Darkest Child by Delores Phillips would be a good Lifetime movie.

Movie True to the Book: Mystic River by Dennis Lehane and The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty.

What is your favorite book to movie?
The Color Purple, The Women of Brewster Place

What was the worse?
Disappearing Acts by Terry McMillan. Wesley Snipes was just not Franklin to me.

What would you like to see turned into a movie?
It's in the works, but I am anxiously awaiting Trying to sleep in the bed you made by Virginia Berry and Donna Grant

Which movie stayed true to the book?
Most movies veer off to some extent. I enjoy it when the change is good.
In my opinion How Stella got her groove back, the movie, was far better than the book.
There were some changes...but to me they made it a better story.

I'm pretty sure the only books I've seen done into movies are Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series. The first movie was similar to the book, except that the little girl was much older. Still, it worked. I've enjoyed watching that series on Hallmark.

I loved the book and movie "Disappearing Acts" but agree that Wesley was not Franklin. Even when I watch it now I am still disappointed. I had a completely different vibe, face & bode pictured for that character!

There's no use in being shy: I'd love to see my novels: Sinsatiable, My Son's Wife and Beautiful Ugly made into movies.

Books I have enjoyed that were made into movies are practically all of Stephen King's novels; The Client and A to Kill by John Grisham; Love Comes Softly

I would like to see The Coldest Winter made into a movie and I can't wait to see Reshonda Tate Billingsley's two novels come to the screen.
