What advice would you offer someone who is starting to write a non fiction book? What steps should they take?

First decide what type of non-fiction you want to write. Do you just want to tell your story and do a memoir? Are you a person who thrives on helping other people and want to do a self-help book? Do you want to do a how to book? What have you been successful in that you can share with others?

I survived divorce and remarried and am an expert on step parenting, so that's what I decided to write about.

Decide what type of book you want to write and the purpose it will serve. Are you looking to help, entertain, or a form of personal release? Those are a few questions to consider.

Hello Everyone! I am LaTara V. Bussey (Ham-Ying), author of Faith in Action: The Power of Using Your Measure. My book discusses the importance of life that lives faith out loud and uses what is in your hands to make a difference in how your life turns out. God desires each of us to be fulfilled and my book helps you to use faith as a catalyst for successful living!

It is my joy to be here to answer your questions today and offer support to you on your writing journey!

A: Like Janice stated, know what you want to write. If you have no idea what you want to write, then your book will have no flow. I think people think non-fiction is an easy genre and it is not. It takes time and effort to write a good piece of work and make it communicate what you desire it to do.

To communicate reality can be a hard pill but it must be swallowed because others need to swallow what you have to share as well.

Write from the heart first and then from fact. My book is a book that is meant to teach others about using faith and yet most saw my story through it; although most of what I shared was not even about me.

Hi everyone, my name is Arnita L. Fields. In response to the question: What advice would you offer someone who is starting to write a non fiction book? What steps should they take?

I would share that they should write to offer wisdom or an answer to an everyday problem or issue that everyday people may face.

The first step is to do some research especially if you do not personally have expertise or experience in the subject area you are writing about.

My advice for someone who wants to write nonfiction is to start by identifying a gap. What I mean by "a gap" is locating a topic or aspect of a topic that either has not been written about before, or has not been written about in the way you plan to write about it. There are a lot of books out there, so why write what has already been written? This is your competitive advantage, doing something new. For me, I was a business owner, struggling in my work and looking for a book that ministered to me about the emotions I was feeling related to ownership. All of the books I found were either about starting a business or being a leader, but I couldn't find a book that dealt with the psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of running one's own business. So I wrote it. I found a gap and filled it. This is how you create a platform that others can't compete with because you built it. Once you choose your topic, the next step is to research. You need to have enough resources to back up your statements or it will just seem like opinions. Organize your research into topics and subtopics, and build your manuscript with these headers as your guide.
