Baby Love Virtual Tour with Suzette Riddick

Getting to know Suzette Riddick

 1. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Tell a patient’s family that their loved one has passed on.

2. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

I can’t get into the details because it’s work related. However, having to work in an environment where I’m the minority (African American and a woman) and being excluded is difficult. Some days it’s an uphill battle, especially when everyone around me wants to pretend we’re all playing on an even field. If I was weak and unconfident in my abilities as a nurse practitioner, I would have given up a long time ago.

3. What story does your family always tell about you?

Oh Lord have mercy, lol! My sister always tells the story of how I tricked her into licking a dog biscuit. It was a late Friday night and we were pretty bored as we sat at the kitchen table. Suddenly my eyes just happened to stray to the box of treats on top of the refrigerator for the family dog. As the youngest girl of the family, I can now admit I had some impish ways. So, this is how it went down…

“I wonder what a dog biscuit taste like?” My sister hunches her shoulders.

“I don’t know.” “You want to try one?”

“No! I don’t want to try one. Are you crazy?” My sister objects as she wrinkles up her nose. I laugh at her reaction.

“Come on…if you lick one, I’ll lick one, too.” I say ever so convincing. I guess we were both curious because my sister agrees. The women in my family are tiny, so at the age of twelve I had to drag the chair to the fridge so I could reach the box. I grab the box and drag the chair back to the table. I grinned at my sister, slid the box across the table and told her she could go first since she’s the oldest.

Taking the doggie treat out she looked at it, closed her eyes really tight and darted her tongue out so fast there was no way she even tasted the darn thing, She slides me the box and grins.

“Now it’s your turn.” The little brat that I am, I start shaking my head. “I’m not licking no dog biscuit! That’s nasty!” My sister’s face turns a deep crimson. I can only imagine what she’s thinking as she threatens between clenched teeth, “You better lick that dog biscuit!” LOL! Of course I ended up licking that stupid dog biscuit!

About the Author

Suzette’s love for the genre and a need to find a place of escapism is what encouraged her in 2008 to write her first novel A Special Summer under the pen name Victoria Wells. After receiving positive feedback from readers eager to know what was going to happen next with the characters, she was inspired to write the sequel, When Love Comes Around. And before she knew it, the Love Conquers All Series was born. From this series Second Chance at Love was nominated for an Emma Award for E-book of the Year. Currently Suzette is working on a new series titled Love at Last.

Suzette,
That dog biscuit story is hilarious. You should find a way to get that in one of your books.

I am sorry you are experiencing covert racism/exclusionism at your job. As a black female, I understand perfectly...and if you are smart, skilled, and confident, it kills them.

Anyway, good luck on the rest of the tour and on your new book.

By the way, loved your stories as Victoria Wells. Haven't read this one yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it also.

Suzette, that dog biscuit story has me crying over here! That so sounds like something my sister and I would have done!

I'm sorry that you are having to go through things at the job. It seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same!

It was fun getting a chance to read about you!
