AUTHOR INTRO: Christie Walker Bos

Please give the readers a brief bio on you the person and the writer.

I’ve been a writer all my life. From writing contests in 7th grade, to a degree in journalism, to writing romantic comedy, writing isn’t something I do, it’s who I am. I live in a little house in the mountains of Southern California (where all those wildfires keep erupting!!!) in Big Bear Lake with my husband of five years and my golden retriever, Simba.

I’ve always said I would like a t-shirt that reads: I am your worst nightmare. I am an environmentalist, feminist, pagan. If I could be a super hero I would be Joan of Arc for the environment. In one of my future romantic comedies I want to have a tree sitter fall in love with the developer who is trying to cut down her tree.

Tell us about your current book?

Magical Man List is a real hoot! It’s the story of two women, Samantha and Marta who decide to make “man lists” detailing all the traits and characteristics they want in the perfect man. To activate their lists, they make up “magical” ceremonies that involve breaking into Dodger Stadium and almost drowning in the Pacific ocean. But if there’s one thing Sam and Marta discover on their hilarious journey—there’s no sacrifice too great when it comes to finding true love.

What would you like your readers to take away from your book?

First, I hope you laugh. Laugh, laugh and laugh some more. Then I hope you make a list of your own. Already have a man? Make a list of your goals, create a ceremony, and then watch your dreams come true. I’m a big list maker and making lists has always worked for me. Keeps me on track and focused on what I want.

What inspired this story?

Magical Man List was inspired by my own search for a soul mate after a 19-year loveless marriage. After dating all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons I decided the real reason I was striking out time after time was because I didn’t REALLY know what I wanted. So a friend and I decided to create “man lists.” I buried my list on top of a mountain and two months later this man showed up. After dating him for three months, I had crossed off 63 out of 65 items. As Mary Poppins would say he was “practically perfect in every way” so I married the guy.

The part about breaking into Dodger Stadium was based on a real event as well. When I was 18, a friend and I actually snuck into Dodger Stadium during the off-season. It took place almost exactly as I’ve written it in the book, changing the characters to protect the guilty. I contacted Dodger Stadium to make sure they had changed things around since then and even went to the Stadium to make sure I wasn’t writing a blue print for others to sneak in. They assured me that security was much tighter in 2007 than back in 1974.

How long did it take from first word to sale? What were some of the steps along the journey?

My first attempt at writing romantic comedy was The Magical Man List. I had a great agent and she worked diligently at trying to find a publisher for my novel. When after two years we had run up against one dead end after another, so I decided to self-publish. I sold enough of this first run to pay myself back for the printing costs. Not bad. In the meantime, I started on my second novel, The Write Man for Her. By now I had lost my agent (she retired) and was trying, on my own, to find a publisher. At a writers conference I had a five-minute show & tell with the publisher of Cerridwen Press. She was intrigued by my book and told me to send it in. Fifteen months later my first e-book was published, The Write Man for Her. On a whim, I sent them my first novel, The Magical Man List and they loved it, too. They gave it a new cover and a new life as an e-book with the title: Magical Man List.
