Dying on the Edge Blog Tour with Francine Craft

Getting to know Francine Craft…

What has been the best and the worst experience you’ve had on your literary journey?

The best was the 15+ years I spent writing romances and romantic suspense for Kensington, BET and Harlequin. These were truly wonderful people I worked with and all my editors were jewels and talented. The money was good, fair; they gave a lot of support. I was never a bestselling author, but was told my books were well received, overseas, as well as in the U.S. But perhaps best of all is now when I’ve self-published Edge and the response has been so gratifying. I was jittery that AA’s might not go for it, but they have, with a surprising number saying they “love it.” My reviews have been astonishing and it makes me so happy.

The worst – that’s easy. I didn’t write for 11 years of publish a book for 20 years when a wonderful company bought my interracial marriage novel in 1973 and selected it as their lead book for fall. They went bankrupt, but the book was bought twice by other publishers, then published by the excellent Berkley and it was a total disaster. The artist gave me a lurid, licentious cover of a gorgeous black-white couple, obviously naked, behind a blanket. Remember, this was 1975. I have not approached a publisher since and may never again.

How long does it take you to write a novel?

A year to a year and a half. Sometimes two. The romances and romantic suspense took about five – six months.

What is the one thing that has surprised you the most during your writing career?

Being translated into Bulgarian and into Portuguese. Also, the wonderful reception some of my books received in the United Kingdom. And of course the smashing reception Edge has so far gotten in the AA community.
