FEATURED AUTHOR: Tina Martin

Tina Martin was born in Ahoskie, North Carolina and developed a love for writing in high school. She pursued creative writing courses in college and in 2007, self-published her first poetry book, Love Like Yours. She now uses her prolific style of writing to pen fiction novels, the latest being, Secrets On Lake Drive (Xpress Yourself Publishing) available now at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble online. You can read more about Tina at her website: http://www.tinamartinbooks.com/.

Secrets On Lake Drive

Monica’s life is certainly no fairytale. She’s failed at a relationship, at being a mother and at twenty-four, teaching is her only passion. She singles out Sean Beauvais, one of her student’s fathers – at a parent teacher conference, and schools him about taking care of his son. Their exchange gets heated, but later, Sean realizes that he can use Monica’s passion to his advantage; offering her a high-paying summer job being his son’s live-in babysitter.

Monica knows the rumors about Sean and his womanizing ways, but against her better judgment, she accepts his offer. She convinces herself that she has enough willpower to avoid her new, thirty-two year old sexy, summer boss – his chiseled chest, pretty green eyes and charm that just won’t quit. But after only a few weeks in his crib, Monica finds it a struggle to keep her eyes off of Sean. Can she handle staying focused on her babysitting gig for three months without being swept off of her feet by Milwaukee’s finest? Or is Sean’s game too much for the young, conservative teacher to handle?

Having been heartbroken in the past, Monica is reluctant to play this dangerous game with a confirmed heartbreaker. But it’s what she doesn’t know about Sean that she should be concerned about.

How did you start out your writing career?

In 1998, I began writing poetry, using it as a means to extract feelings from my young, confused heart. Back then, my poems were so dark and depressing, I was ashamed to let anyone read them. After I passed that stage of my life, I enrolled in a creative course in college (and was one of the few people in my class who actually enjoyed the challenge of writing essays). That’s when I knew that I could use writing as a way of showcasing my creativity. So writing poems took me to essays, essays took me to novels and here I am today, writing up a storm!

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned that I have a knack for creating emotions between characters. Fiction romance novels are more enjoyable when readers can connect and/or relate with the characters. Whether you love them or hate them, just the simple face that you’ve felt something after reading my novel means that I’ve done my due diligence as a writer.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

Besides finishing it (*wink*)…I just hope to share my creativity with the literary world. I bring a new, fresh voice to fiction romance and my readers will love my writing style as well as character development.

What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?

It’s been tough to hold down a day job while trying to be a full-time writer. Most times, I’m so mentally drained, I can’t focus on writing in the evenings.

If you had the opportunity to talk with three writers, who would you choose and why?

Terry McMillian because she wrote How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Need I say more!

Nicholas Sparks is a wonderful writer (and a fellow North Carolinian). Message in a Bottle is one of my all time favorites!

Maya Angelou puts her heart on paper, and that’s what I strive to do when I write. I would love to meet her.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

I wish I knew how much money is involved with creating a good novel. Editing, marketing, tours, events, book fairs – they all cost money and it’s all good to want to be a writer, but there’s a good chance you will go broke in the process.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

Do expect rejection, especially when seeking a publisher or literary agent. Certain publishing houses are looking for certain types of books. But even after all the rejection, just know that if your work doesn’t fit what they are looking for, it doesn’t mean that you’re not a good writer. Don’t give up if writing is your dream. Always pursue your passion no matter what and you will have no regrets (even if you are tired and broke).

I borrowed this question from Author Carleene Brice, What is your author fantasy?

I can take this question in so many directions, but I’ll keep it simple. My author fantasy would be for people to actually know who I am and recognize me for the talent I bring to African American fiction.

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

Great question. I always found it somewhat bazaar how non-writers tend to be overly critical with their book reviews; but they’ve never written a book. So what an author misspelled a word that the editor didn’t catch…I don’t think that’s worth the low one-star death penalty rating. I think more people should ask themselves if they were actually entertained by the story. Judge a book by its content and message – not by how many misspelled words you can find.

What was the best advice you’d ever gotten about the publishing industry? The worst?

The best advice I received was to expect rejection; especially from a large publishing houses and literary agents. I don’t think I’ve received any bad advice.

If you could visit any place in the world where would you travel to?

Jamaica – I must be the only person in the U.S. who’s never been to Jamaica. Then again, I’m only three hours away from Myrtle Beach and I’ve never been there. So I’m going to dream small and say Myrtle Beach.

What is something readers would be surprised you do?

I collect strange/interesting pottery. If it looks weird, I’m going to buy it! I also collect lighthouses.

Our theme this month is Online Marketing. What online marketing have you found works well for you?

Facebook. The event calendar is very convenient, and posting my tour schedule and book signings are great. I just got a Twitter account, but I’m not quite sure about Twitter yet. I hate reading other people’s tweets. And the whole concept of having “followers” makes me feel greater than what I am. I mean, Jesus had followers.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

I know that I’m a great writer and when people read my novels, they will be completely involved. One fan told me that when she started reading Secrets On Lake Drive, she couldn’t put it down. She finished the book in two days!

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

I actually have an excerpt of my next novel, Another Man’s Treasure on my website, http://www.tinamartinbooks.com/. Make sure you stop by to read the excerpt. Just to give you a rundown on the novel, it is a romance about a man, Reggie Howard, who has a woman, Tiphani Water, for his best friend. He loves her as his best friend, even though he kinda knows that Tiphani wants more. Reggie (who also has a girlfriend) sort of have feelings for Tiphani as well, but he doesn’t act on his feelings until he sees another man, Derrick Brooks, pushing up on her. Now, all of a sudden, he wants to make a move, but it may be too late. Another Man’s Treasure is an emotionally-charged novel about not appreciating the one you have until you see them in the arms of someone else.

How can readers get in contact with you? (mail, email, website)

I have a contact page on my website: www.tinamartinbooks.com, where you can also read all excerpts of my books and find out about tours, book signings, etc. My email address is tina@tinamartinbooks.com. I personally respond to all emails! Also, find me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/tinamartinbooks.

Soon After Blog Tour

Multi-published author, teacher, wife and mother, Sherryle seeks to be a fresh voice in Christian Fiction. Her triumphant debut novel, Soon and Very Soon (2007) was followed up by her sophomore release, The Manual (2009). Soon After marks the return of her franchise characters, Pastors WIllie and Vanessa Green and the Harvest Baptist church saga. Sherrryle is currently working on her fourth novel for Urban Christian (Urban/Kensington) titled Taylor-Made. She currently lives in Maryland with her husband and two children.

Sherryle, tell us about Soon After.

Soon After picks up where my debut novel, Soon and Very Soon left off. In the first installment two pastors marry and decide to combine their churches. In this second installment the ministry birthed by one over at Harvest Baptist church is likely to be exploited by the minister left to run the church. With more than one who had an interest in the deed in the property and even more with an emotional investment in the church itself, it’s up to reporter, Alexis Montgomery and Chief Herbert Rich to solve the crime.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

Being a sequel, this storyline was a natural progression from the first. In the first book I wanted the readers to take a peek inside the home of a ministry couple. In this book I wanted to take a peek inside the ministry. How are they different? How are they affecting the community?

Who are your main character(s)?

Soon After marks the return of my franchise characters, Willie and Vanessa Green who were and still are newlyweds and now Co-Pastors of a church. Deacon Charley Thompson, their main nemesis to the Greens and the merger of the churches in the first installment is the main suspect. Charley is instrumental in getting his nephew, Abe Townsend, the pawn shop owner and preacher, to take over as Pastor of the Harvest Baptist church. Rounding out the suspects is Roy Jones, the homeless renegade who found Christ on the streets outside the church and now is looking for a pulpit of his own and a willing ear.

Did you have a favorite character(s)? Who and why?

I have always loved Vanessa Green. She has amazing tenacity. We see a lot of her struggles being a female pastor in the first book. She has my temperament in a lot of ways, but she is bolder and more determined than me.

Did you have to do quite a bit of research for this novel?

Yes, more than ever before. This story moved into the classification of Christian Crime Fiction. I have much respect for mystery writers. They know their audience is the same group of people who love Crime dramas like CSI and Law and Order. You’ve got to have your facts straight. You can’t fudge an investigation. So, I had to study arson scene forensics, and read accounts from different Fire Chiefs in a book called Heat.

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading Soon After?

I wanted to show that ministry is a collective mindset. Churches may prosper and grow, but so should the surrounding community. Sometimes we try to stuff the arc of God’s influence inside the church house and leave it there. What better way to show that than by literally burning the walls down and exposing the turmoil from within.

Okay, a not-so-fun question. How important are reviews to you as a writer?

Reviews add credibility to your book. It also garners a lot of exposure. Most well known reviewers have their own readership. These readers come to rely on the thumbs up/thumbs down critique that helps narrow down their choices. A good book placed with key reviewers can create a buzz in that vital fist month of a book’s release.

About the Book

The Ministry birthed by one will be exploited by another. Can Willie Green stand idly by and let that happen?

When Pastors Willie Green and Vanessa Morton got married and moved to merge their churches, they never expected so much resistance. Now it seems someone is sending a strong message by setting fire to the Harvest Baptist Church building.

The newly unified Pleasant Harvest Baptist Church is no more than four months into business as usual before Co-Pastor Willie Green is drawn into the middle of an arson investigation. Alexis Montgomery, an overzealous reporter, sees the experienced pastor as a great source to latch onto as she tries to unearth the stories that might solve the crime. Instead of being bothered by the presence of this woman, Co-Pastor Vanessa uses it as a distraction to help conceal her own secrets.

Orchestrating the unification rift makes Deacon Charley Thompson a prime suspect. His unexpected silence only fuels the accusations of guilt, and his meek wife becomes his unlikely spokesperson. Meanwhile, his nephew, Abe Townsend, couldn’t care less about family allegiances. Led by an anonymous publicist, Abe and the remaining displaced members of Harvest Baptist Church gain notoriety when news reports garner an outcry of sympathy and support.

What should have been a simple unification of two churches has turned into something much more complicated, and it will take plenty of faith to hold it all.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Marla Martenson

Marla Martenson is a professional matchmaker, life coach, speaker and the author of three books.

In her first book, Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting Marla combines her dating expertise with the sure-fire techniques of the Law of Attraction to help bring love into her readers lives.

Her second book, Good Date, Bad Date, offers valuable advice for single women struggling with the secret to successful dating. Using real life case studies, she reveals what men are really thinking during and after a date.

In her latest book, Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days as an exclusive L.A. matchmaker and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks.

Marla and her husband reside in blissful harmony in Los Angeles, where she continues to bring her considerable matchmaking expertise to the single population of star-studded Southern California.

Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker

Welcome to the world of Marla Martenson. The Cupid of Beverly Hills, she has introduced countless couples who have gone on to get married and live happily ever after—so far. But for every success story, there are more dating disasters, high-maintenance clients, out-of-touch men (and women), and downright comical situations with which she has to contend.
In Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker, Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days in an exclusive L.A. matchmaking agency and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks. From juggling the demands her out-of-touch clients and trying her best to meet the capricious demands of an insensitive boss to the ups and downs of her own marriage with a Latin husband who doesn’t think that she is “domestic” enough, Marla writes with charm and self-effacement about the universal struggles that all women face in their lives.

Readers will laugh, cringe, and cry as they journey with her through outrageous stories about the indignities of dating in Los Angeles, dealing with overblown egos, vicariously hobnobbing with celebrities, and navigating the wannabe-land of Beverly Hills. In a land where perfection is almost a prerequisite, even Marla can’t help but run for the Botox every once in a while.

How did you start out your writing career?

I started my writing career a few years ago when I decided to write a relationship advice book. I wanted to be a writer since I was in grade school, but I never followed up on it until I had the idea for Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting. I started out by keeping notes and funny emails that I would get at the dating service I worked at and after a couple of years, I took those notes as well as things that I had learned on the job and was able to write a book.

What did you learn while writing this book?

In writing my first book, I learned that dreams really can come true. I never had the confidence to write before, but during the process I discovered that I was a good writer and that my initial feelings and desires of wanting to write from a young age, was the Universe gently telling me which direction to go. While writing my new book, Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker through working with a wonderful editor, I learned how to develop characters and how to really tighten up a story. Writing a memoir is certainly a different experience than writing self help books.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

I hope to entertain people and make them laugh. Nothing feels better than when someone emails me and tells me that they couldn't put the book down because they were enjoying it so much. I would also love this book to be turned into a film or TV series.

What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?

I guess I would have to say being published.

If you had the opportunity to talk with three writers, who would you choose and why?

I would love to have a drink with Jen Lancaster, because her books were the inspiration for Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker. I am in awe of how she went right to the top with her witty, snarky memoirs about her life with her husband. I would love to talk to J.K. Rowling, I think she is the most amazing writer and would love to know how she is able to keep track of all of the characters and story lines through out seven books. I can't imagine writing a 700 page book and being able to keep track of everyone.

And finally there is an Indian author called Rohinton Mistry who wrote one of my all time favorite books, A Fine Balance. The Indian culture fascinates me and it would be wonderful to have a cup of tea with him and talk about writing.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

I wish I would have known how to manage my money, time and patience better.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

Do write every day or at least every week. The only way to get any headway with a project is to work on it on a consistent basis.

Don't be too hard on yourself, let the ideas and words flow onto the page, have fun with it. If it feels like a chore you won't stick with it.

I borrowed this question from Author Carleene Brice, What is your author fantasy?

My author fantasy is to be number one on the New York Times Best Seller list and to have my books go to the big screen.

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

That just because an author has a book at Barnes and Noble, doesn't mean that they are rich. A funny story to illustrate this point is, about three years ago my husband and I were house hunting. Our real estate agent told her friend that she was helping the author Marla Martenson look for a house. The friend replied, "Wow, Marla Martenson? You must be looking at million dollar houses!"

What was the best advice you’d ever gotten about the publishing industry?

The worst? The best advice was that it is a business, and an author must do something everyday to promote their book. I can't say I've had any bad advice. I read a lot about publishing and marketing so I am always refreshing my mind with wonderful information and tips.

If you could visit any place in the world where would you travel to?

I really want to go to India.

What is something readers would be surprised you do?

I like to kiss kittens on the lips.

Our theme this month is Online Marketing. What online marketing have you found works well for you?

Getting reviewed on book blogs, being active on facebook, and doing interviews on blog talk radio shows have all been great for me.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

What I know for sure is when we follow our passions and our dreams instead of taking the easy route, life really sparkles and is truly worth living.

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

My next book is the sequel to Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker. The adventures continue....

How can readers get in contact with you?

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Dare to Take Charge

DARE TO TAKE CHARGE

By Glenda Hatchett

For nearly ten years, Judge Glenda Hatchett has delighted TV audiences with a brand of justice that turns the everyday into something eminently watchable.

Her message can be distilled into the following two words: Dare Yourself. Whatever obstacles or fears one faces, Judge Hatchett's prescription implores readers to write their own story in this life. With care and conviction, Judge Hatchett uses real life stories from the courtroom and her personal life to counsel readers. Shows them how to find their true purpose and gifts, to be real about their reality and its potential outside of challenging circumstances, and to always be true to themselves.

Interactive as well as inspirational, DARE TO TAKE CHARGE challenges the reader to ask self-reflective questions that lead to moments of self-discovery and a defined pathway to healing. Daring her audience to study the positive with the same interest and intensity that they study the negative, Judge Hatchett uncovers the potential for grace and success in lives that are now punctuated with despair and unfaithfulness.

A graduate of Emory University School of Law, Judge Glenda Hatchett became Delta Airlines' highest-ranking African-American woman when she served in dual roles as a senior attorney and Manager of Public Relations. The position earned her a spot on Ebony Magazine's "100 Best and Brightest Women in Corporate America." She left Delta to become Georgia's first African-American Chief Presiding Judge of a state court and the department head of one of the largest juvenile court systems in the country in Fulton, GA. Her TV show, Judge Hatchett, launched in 2000 and was nominated for Emmy awards in 2008 and 2009. She is also the author of the #1 Essence bestselling parenting book, Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say. She resides in Atlanta, GA with her two sons. Visit http://glendahatchett.com/.

SORMAG INSPIRATION - SEPTEMBER Inspirations

Before there was a SORMAG there was the Delphi group – Aspiring African American Romance Writers. I started it in hope of meeting other romance writers to share in our journey of writing. To my surprise it blossomed into a beautiful support group. Many published authors stopped by to share their wisdom.

Today I wanted to spotlight the authors who were a part of this group.  I don't know if they ever knew how much we appreciated them answering our many questions and sharing their writing journey with us newbies. A few were newly published authors and we all were excited to see their books on the shelves.  We could say we knew them when.

I didn’t have enough months to acknowledge them all, but I wanted to make sure that I let them know that I appreciated them sharing with us and encouraging us in our writing.

THANK YOU so much for inspiring SORMAG.

It was here that she first started writing romance as a teenager. The island proved to be the perfect setting for her first novel, Spellbound. Since then, Deirdre has published more than a dozen books and two novellas, all of which have garnered critical acclaim and honors. Deirdre has won two prestigious Emma awards. Her work has been featured in a variety of publications, including Black Issues Book Review, Romantic Times, Affaire de Coeur and Blackboard Bestsellers List. Deirdre lives in Bronx, New York, with her husband and their two children. She enjoys reading, dancing, calligraphy, and "wicked" crossword puzzles.

In fourteen years she's published seventeen novels and had nine stories included in anthologies. When asked why she writes romances, she smiles and says it's the only genre in which happily ever after is a foregone conclusion. Plus, where else are you going to find a perfect male?

It's Our Anniversary - 10 years of promoting books

10 years ago while on maternity leave with my second child I created the first issue of SORMAG – Shades Of Romance Magazine. I never dreamed it would survive one year less known 10 years. I count it all a blessing from God.

At the time I wanted something on the level of Romantic Times, but I didn’t have RT budget to produce a glossy magazine. I did a lot of research about the latest fade, online magazines and saw the online magazine is where I wanted to be. I eventually moved to the real magazines but I missed the less stress of producing an online magazine. In 2005, I returned back online this time using the blog concept. I loved the blog because I was able to interact more with our readers. I think it is where the magazine will stay.

Over the years we’ve changed a lot, and one of the changes I made was the cover author. Doing the magazine on the blog it was kind of hard to feature one person; however I believe I’ve come up with a way to feature our cover author again and also get a chance to do something I miss, live interviews. In October we will bring the cover author back and hopefully it will be a feature you enjoy.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support over the years. I’ve enjoyed meeting all the new authors featured in the magazine. They have inspired me as I too walk the journey of publication.

I’ve made new friends because of SORMAG and I treasure those relationships.

I tell you it has been a wonderful adventure each day with SORMAG and I look forward to the many years to come. Yes I said many years because now I see that I will do the magazine until the Lord tells me it is time to stop. I pray you continue to support us and I promise to continue to introduce you to the hottest books on the shelves and help you as you make your way to publication.

Each Friday this month, I invite you to stop by for our Open House. We will be celebrating here on the blog and at our new FAN PAGE on Facebook. If you’re on facebook, stop by join in on the fun.

There will be prizes for our readers and for the authors.

Please feel free to tell us about your favorite SORMAG moment or post a congratulations.
