Interview:

What inspired your book?

We were inspired to share little known group travel tips and industry secrets to help travelers realize its ease and benefits.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

I want them to realize that they can travel stress free as a group and the many benefits that come from Group Travel. It is possible and profitable!

What did you learn while writing this book?

It was a lesson in persistence. Actually writing a book and going through the editing process is more than I expected. 

What are three things you wished known before you reached where you are now?

I wished I knew the importance of pre-launch activities for the book. I would have liked to be more proficient in Canva for book marketing graphics. I wish I connected with authors to network learn from those who have gone before. For example connecting sooner with “See Ya On The Net Promotion Group” in Facebook.

What advise would you offer to someone whose first book is about to be released?

Have a To Do List and or Action list and have a marketing plan in place. Don’t wait for the book to be released to begin marketing. Begin Pre-Launch activities now!

What’s the most interesting change in your life as a result of being a published author?

I would say it has given me increased confidence.

What are your three favorite social media platforms and how are you using them for promotion?

Facebook, Twitter and Periscope are favorites of mine. When I scope my goal is to increase my list with a free offer. I post a graphic of my book with the book info link. I need to be more consistent on social media and increase my offline promotions.

Oprah always asks what do you know for sure?

I know what a blessing my heavenly Father and Lord and savior, Jesus Christ has been in my life.

If someone told my younger self that I would be a published author one day, I would not have believed them.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Michelle Mitchell

Michelle Mitchell has always been creative; the builder of play forts, and the writer of numerous songs that she hoped to hear on the radio. She always enjoyed singing, dancing, reading and writing. One of her dreams was to be a backup dancer for Janet Jackson, but when that didn’t happen, she continued to focus on songwriting. She knew she could shine brightest if she could work in a field where she could create, but she had an awkward start in finding her voice. 

A Georgia native, Michelle attended Georgia Southern University where she majored in Communication Arts and minored in Journalism. After graduating, she had a short stint as a feature writing before returning to school and entering corporate America. Needing a creative outlet in between courses, Michelle got inspired and began working on her first novel, Truth Is.... After sending out several queries, she was humbled to receive an offer to write for Jacquelin Thomas Presents, an imprint under Brown Girls Publishing.

When she’s not writing, she enjoys trying new restaurants, traveling, and reading. Michelle is a diehard fanatic of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Hawks. She still resides in Georgia, where she is a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Marietta. You can write her at

New relationships are exciting—until they aren’t. What happens when all the things left unsaid in a new relationship, come to the forefront? Can a lack of disclosure close the door on love or will the truth lead to a second chance? 

These are the thoughts swimming through Ansley Wright’s head as she explores her heart when Davis Montclair enters her life. Burned by hasty decisions in the past, she’s reluctant to give him a chance, but the heart wants what it wants. 

Davis Montclair, a man burdened with a troubled past, was not looking for love, but when he laid eyes on Ansley he would stop at nothing to have her as his woman.  It seems the weight of the world is on his shoulders, as he tries to balance the drama that follows him at every turn as he fights for a chance at love and redemption with Ansley.

As they try to battle through the barriers thrown at them, they will have to question if the truth will really set them free. 

What inspired your book?

I was in grad school when I first started working on this manuscript. During that time, the reoccurring theme in the news revolved around men and women who were mislead or misinformed about the person that were dating. From the pastor who spread HIV to unsuspecting women, the emergence of the dating website Don't Date Him Girl.com, which allows women to post details about their terrible dating experiences....there was a common theme. These men and women built relationships with people who they thought they could trust. Which led me to think about, the mask we where when we are dating someone. Not everyone does this, but for those who do, what's the truth behind the dating facade people wear when they are first meeting someone and what consequences come with rushing into relationships. Everyone is so eager to have love, that they often ignore the warning signs that are right in front of them.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

I hope readers will be encouraged and realize the importance of self-awareness, self-respect, and second chances.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

I enjoyed writing about Simeon. She's beautiful, smart, and goes after what she wants, but behind her power, there's a vulnerability. I can't wait to see if readers will root for her or tear her apart. From the few that have gotten a chance to read the first three chapters, it does not look like she will win any popularity contest.

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned that I write "so" a lot. I still have some developing to do, but I'm realizing I like a bit of mystery and drama. In real life, I like to laugh, but I created some characters who lead drama-filled lives. Self-inflicted, drama. I also learned that I didn't want to sacrifice any characters, meaning if they behaved badly, I didn't want one character to be so mischievous but I learned you can't get too attached.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now? 

Three things that I wish I would have known before getting this opportunity are:

    How to tell the story without being too wordy. I want to give the reader everything, but I'm learning you can still give them a great story without being excessively wordy.

    How to write enticing back cover copy. I think this may be due to my being too wordy, because the back cover is short and should draw the reader in quickly. 

    How to set a writing regiment and stick to that routine daily. I haven't figured out a routine just yet.

What advice would you offer to someone whose first book is about to be released?

Jacquelin, Reshonda, and Victoria are always encouraging us to continue to learn and build our craft. My advice would be what I've taken from them, which is to read style books, take courses, read the works of other authors, and don't take critique too personal, it can help you grow as a writer.

What’s the most interesting change in your life as a result of being a published author?

I'm a shy person and creating has always been a outlet from singing to writing songs...drawing, etc. But I've never been placed in a situation where my words had to stand on their own. It's like exposing yourself to the world. I've written for a publication but I wouldn't compare the two. As my release date approaches I feel excited and very naked.

What are your three favorite social media platforms and how are you using them for promotion?

I enjoy exploring on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. I'm addicted to Pinterest, but have not learned how to best use it as a promotional tool. With Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, I'm able to promote my book and respond to queries. It's also great in that you can see who is following and what their interest are once your follow them back. With Instagram and Twitter, you can find trending topics and use those hashtags to further extend your reach.

Oprah always asks, what do you know for sure?

I know that pain is temporary, and that I have to push ahead through the hurt to see the rewards.

My debut novel, Truth Is... under the Jacquelin Thomas Presents imprint, with Brown Girls Books, will be available April 26. What inspired your book?

The inspiration, for me, was the opportunity to write stories about Ex relationships with nineteen talented Women. I loved that this Anthology was not about male bashing and that it told stories of Ex-lovers, families and friends. 

What would you like for readers to take away from your book?

That love is inevitable. It can make you, break you and blind you, but you will love and you will survive the outcome of that love. 

Which Character did you have the most fun writing about?

I had the most fun writing Tangie. I could relate to her. She wanted to shed her “old” life in an effort to chase after a life she thought she wanted. She had fun in the process. She learned lessons but she ends up realizing that her “old” life was “home” and it’s where she was loved the most.

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned that telling a story is definitely emotional. I had to actually become Tangie and feel everything that she felt, in order for me to tell the story the way it needed to be told. 

What are the three things you wish you’d known before you reached where are now?

1.       Always finish what I start.

2.       God’s delay is not a denial.

3.       What and who God has for me will me mines. All he requires of me is to do my part and have faith that he has the rest. 

What advice would you give someone whose first book is about to be released?

Be wise with Marketing. It can be expensive. Don’t be fooled into outsourcing things that you can do yourself.   

What’s the most interesting change in your life, as a result of being a published Author?

I have more confidence in my writing. I’m also more critical of what I write.

What’s your three favorite Social Media platforms and how are you using them for promotion?

Facebook, Twitter and Linked in. Nothing works better than word of mouth. I constantly advertise and hold contests to bring people in.

I can Dream big and make them a reality, because I can do ALL things through Christ.

What inspired your book?

A New York Kind of Love was completely inspired by a random thought. What would it be like to win a weekend in Hollywood with a handsome movie star? Finding the inspiration for the Hollywood star wasn’t hard to do. Irvin Freeman, the hero, is a sexy British actor who makes women melt with a smile. Three guesses who that is. Faith Logan, my heroine, is a nurse from a small southern town that works hard to take care of her sick parents.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

I hope readers end each of my books with a smile on their face. I also hope readers find my characters to be relatable in some way. I strive to make my characters realistic. You may not always like them, but I hope you understand why they do what they do.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

I had a lot of fun writing Irvin and Faith, but heroes are usually easier for me to write. Maybe it’s because I live in a house full of guys, and my husband’s friends treat me like “one of the guys” when they visit. (Hint: Good way to eavesdrop on the thoughts of men, lol.)  Faith was fun because I enjoyed writing about a woman who’d lost all of her belief in fate and good luck realize she was truly getting an unbelievable happily ever after with a movie star.

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned the benefit of taking lots of pictures and videos when you travel. I have a good memory of my visits to New York, but going back to the pictures and videos I took with my cell phone at the tourist locations I visited helped me recreate those settings.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

1.         I wish I’d known how useful plotting can be. Since becoming a plotter I write faster, and have a clearer idea of the story.

2.         How useful it is to attend writer’s conferences. You make great friends and learn so much about the business and craft of writing.

3.         I’m responsible for my own career. As a newbie, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to get approval from agents, editors, and publishers. At the end of the day I have to do what’s right for me. If a situation doesn’t feel right, or an editor or agent doesn’t jive with you, it’s okay to move on. There will be other opportunities.

What advice would you offer to someone whose first book is about to be released?

Send out a press release to your local media. After my first book is sent a press release to local television and radio stations, newspapers, and magazines. Several of them picked up the story. More recently I did the same for an event and got a TV interview and a feature in my areas largest newspaper. It’s easy to get caught up in only promoting yourself on line, but the people in your hometown want to know about your success just as much as the people you meet online.

What’s the most interesting change in your life as a result of being a published author?

Writing has become a job for me. Yes, I still feel the creativity and enjoy making a story come to life, but I also have to treat it like a business. Deadlines are important, coming up with daily, weekly and monthly goals, and even a budget are all things I didn’t think about before starting this journey.

What’s are your three favorite social media platforms and how are you using them for promotion?

Facebook is good to connect with readers and interact with book clubs. Twitter is a great place to find out what’s happening in the romance community and keep up with editors and agents. Pinterest is great for developing story boards to help visualize my characters and settings.

Oprah always asks, what do you know for sure?

I know for sure that as long as the stories keep coming, I will keep writing them.
