This book was filled with action from the beginning to the end! I did not to put it down until I got to the end. I just had to find out the outcome for Payton and her adorable hero Adriano.
As the story goes Adriano Norwood was sitting in his news van minding his own business when Payton Vaughn jumps in demanding that he drive. Adriano is a gorgeous reporter and playboy in Charlotte on assignment. Never in a million years did he think he would end up in the mist of a mafia mess involving the most notorious family in Charlotte.
Payton is the only witness to her employer ordering a hit on someone. She is placed in protective custody, but flees because her employer's people are coming for her. Payton and Adriano end up on an outrageous and dangerous adventure. Somewhere between dodging bullets and high speed chases, they fall in love.
Ms. White keeps you on the edge of your seat with this one wondering what is gonna happen next and what would you do if this was you.

Where is the chemistry between Salim and Kennedy? The author wrote that Kennedy was falling for Salim and Salim was falling for Kennedy, it felt more like a statement of fact rather than an emotion or a budding desire. My response was really how can you tell. Salim was mysterious and brooding, but he was not described as hot and sexy. Kennedy was strong and orderly, but as dull as the beige color in her apartment.
The love scenes were written functionally and lacked emotion. Their relationship came off more like a business deal that someone was trying to negotiate with or without fringe benefits instead of a budding romance. I just didn't feel it, but I kept reading it waiting for the excitement.
I don't want to say the story was boring, but it was hard to stay focused. They were just words on a page. The characters are definitely forgettable and so is the story. I give it 3 stars for being well written and structually correct.

Tyler Carver is a beautiful full-figured sister who knows that she needs a little assistance in the physical fitness department. A beautiful woman in her own right, she has decided to work on the outer package with the help of her friend Damon. Gunnar Daniels is the owner of the gym where Tyler has come for training assistance from Damon. Poor Damon is sick and Gunnar has to step in for him but brings a bad attitude to the first session. What Gunnar gets is a taste of sister tude when you present yourself in the wrong manner. Little does Tyler realize the effect she has on Gunnar because she is too caught up in her attraction to him.
The book takes us on a wonderful look into people who look at the inside of a person rather than the outside. Tyler is concerned that she is developing feelings for a man of another race but can't deny her attraction. Gunnar Daniels is amazed that he can see so much in Tyler and is totally taken away from the tall blonde; he wasn't happy with the warm chocolate who has totally entrapped his heart. Gunnar helps Tyler not only learn a healthier lifestyle; he helps her see the beauty inside herself. Both characters have demons they have to facade from the past but the inside beauty radiates to the outside and they find love within themselves.
Savannah did a wonder job with the story and lets you go through the insecurities of the full-figured woman. The things she feels and the traps she will fall into because of the stigma attached with being bigger than a size 9. She also allows you to see the insecurities of a man who is attracted to a woman who is outside his race and taste if you would call it. When Gunnar stepped outside his usual comfort zone, he found the love of his life. How many of us can say that we are willing to step outside of what is politically correct and find true happiness.

Well they say opposite attract and in this case they are right. Pam has paired Yasmin Ohaji & Rashawn Bishop. She is a marriage counselor and he is a boxer.
Yasmine is a beautiful woman, any man’s fantasy, is a marriage counselor too busy to find time and happiness for her self. With the help of her sister she set her up on a blind date with Cecil Manning. Cecil is a up and coming politician who through out the entire dinner only talks about himself and what other can do for him.
They both have some bumps in the road alone the way, ex-girlfriend, and ex-fiancé. Rashawn's ex wants to come back only he is ready to move on with Yasmine. Yasmin, is feeling guilty about her ex's death. Once she tells Rashawn what has happened to her ex he begins to understand and from that moment on Yasmine know's that Rashawn is in her corner and she is there for him as well. All is not well but in the end they will come together and I will tell you Ms Yaye did an excellent job writing about these two opposite attract because in their case it works and works well.

Last Night's Kiss is a sweet and special ending for Rosa and her family.
You gave us a chance to get to know more about Rosa and watch her romance with Adam grow. She meets Adam Osborne an ex-reporter who is friends with Davida and he instantly assumes Rosa is a diva and too beautiful. They bump heads on every hand and turn until he finally realizes that she is beautiful inside and out. Soon he finds he can't fight his feelings anymore for her and love blooms for the two with a happy ending. The other characters in the book , Vida, Mr. Bailey, Medea, and Joel, kept me going until the end. Having her brothers, Owen and Dean, drop by was a nice touch. Rosa let her man find her as the bible says ( Adam) She was able to let someone in her life and heart again.

But both must deal with threats and and secrets they both hide from each other that could destroy their love. Well written, characters are interesting and non stereotypical. Intimate scenes are well handled and tasteful. Readers will want to read the entire series.

Living Right on Wrong Street was good. Author, Titus Pollard was able to show how some men hold their feelings inside causing inner turmoil. Inner turmoil over time will result in bad choices.
Job Wright had a problem of believing that God could handle anything he had going on in life. Job thought his talent got him success. Monica, Job’s wife held his past before him which caused the division in their marriage. Fontella and Larry were the two well grounded friends that Job and Monica needed in their life. This novel shows how miscommunication, lack of trust and faith in God is a formula for divorce and temptation.
I enjoyed the road to redemption that Job went on to find God. I enjoyed how Monica proved she really had Job’s back in their marriage, career and life. I loved the fight in Monica and Job. I think marriages need to have the fight in order to stay married and love it.

This was a good book about four girls who applied for a sorority, but when one of the girls was rejected, their friendship was at risk. When they realized the reason she was rejected, it caused the other three girls to decide whether to stick with their friend or to join the sorority. This was an excellent book on teen friendship and I encourage all teenage girls to read it.

This book is about Eboni who was just accepted into Millwood High School, the hardest school to get into in Baltimore. In the midst of her excitement, her Dad is relocated to Los Angeles, California. It takes awhile for Eboni to fit in at her new school. Eventually she meets friends and they encourage her to run for school President, but she finds out opposition was her true enemy – Maya. The book left us hanging with many unfinished questions at the end:
Did Eboni win the election?
Did Eboni’s friends ever settle things back home?
Did Eboni win G over?
Hopefully a sequel to this book is coming soon with much needed answers.

It appears that he is intrigued by the icy exterior and does everything he can to get past her icy demeanor.
Shari has other plans. She wants a no strings attached affair and to return home with no regrets. However Michael is looking for something more substantial. This is an entertaining novel set in the Caribbean with characters who are quite likeable. There is a lot of romance, mystery, and laughs in it. Their story is your typical romance novel, but what sets it apart is the Caribbean setting and the writer's attention to detail that draws you into the novel. It is an entertaining read for a cold winter's night.

Cullen’s willing to work toward being objective about the grant while still pursuing a relationship. Danita isn’t very trusting because of previous mistakes with men. She’s willing to put the relationship aside until the decision about the grant is made. Life of course has different plans for the couple who can no longer deny the attraction. Is attraction enough when the dramas of life visit their street?
This book was a great show of realistic romance, it felt like taking a peek into the lives of a couple you know. The intimate scenes were very tastefully done and left some things to the imagination. Job well done on this debut book.

This is my first time reading a book by Dara Girard. What an excellent read! I could not wait for the other three "Black Stocking Society" stories.
Mary and Edmund are two reluctant people who discover that love maybe scary but its worth the risk. Mary is a meek 'don't rock the boat' kind of gal who dons a pair of thigh highs and discovers her "Inner Diva". Edmund has power and money but no real or true happiness in his life. Edmund chooses Mary for the wrong reasons but she turns out to be the right choice for him for all the right reasons.
Those of you who are like me and want to know if this story has passion and sexual tension you won't be disappointed. I am anxiously awaiting the next story due out in October 2008.

Notorious by Michele Martinez is the fourth novel to feature
Martinez's heroine, Melanie Vargas. The story begins at full speed as
Vargas, meets with the lawyer of the rapper she's trying to put away
for murder. The lawyer is killed right in front of Melanie and now her
life is on the line. Come to find out, her relationship with the
lawyer was more than professional and she is determined to find his
killer. But as she searches for answers she realizes there's more to
it all than she can imagine. The deeper she delves the more dangerous
it becomes.
Notorious is a well-written, well-plotted novel that keeps you turning
the pages. Realistic characters and situations make this story edgy,
intriguing and a delight to read. Martinez is an excellent writer and
I can't wait to read more of her work.

For Rhonda Lee math terms are simple. She can easily say “Euclidian dodecahedron” and “deltoidal trihexagonal tiling,” but after a frightening encounter with a rich boy at her prestigious private school in Columbus, she can’t bring herself to say the word pregnant. At the opening of My Life as a Rhombus Rhonda who is a senior in high school has sworn off contact with all boys. Not only that, she has also resolved not to have anything to do with those she deemed as popular, spoiled, stuck up and superficial—like her ex-boyfriend. Instead she’s decided to focus on her studies and getting a much needed scholarship for her dream college—Georgia Tech.
What Rhonda hadn’t counted on was that perhaps some of her postulates were erroneous.
What happens to Rhonda is what happens to all of us when we swear to never do such and such ever again in life. For those who make vows it’s guaranteed that a test of our determination is on the horizon. While working as a tutor for younger children at the West Columbia Community Center, Rhonda is coerced into being a trigonometry tutor for Sarah Gamble, a classmates from her own school. Sarah is a popular cheerleader, daughter of a prominent judge and everything Rhonda is trying to avoid. An unlikely friendship between the two girls develops when Rhonda learns that she and Sarah have more in common than she’d originally thought.
Rhonda’s friendship with Sarah dredges up some unsettled issues Rhonda hadn’t dealt with regarding her own father. And close proximity to Sarah’s handsome brother David, triggers all sorts of complicated emotions and unresolved concerns as well.
Rhonda Lee accurately reflects the mindset of an adolescent female outsider and it was certainly nice to see a smart Black girl as a heroine. One of the things I found interesting about the book is that the author Varian Johnson is a guy! The author interview in the back was a nice touch, providing insight for young readers on how stories are actually written. They don’t just appear from thin air, a writer crafts them through a series of decisions. Johnson had originally attended to write the story from Rhonda’s father’s point of view, but then realized, this was Rhonda’s story to tell.
My Life as a Rhombus has a rather somber feel that is very unlike the other YA titles I’ve read of late. The novel is engaging; however this is not purely a “fun” book. It’s a serious story dealing with issues that are very important to this age group--fitting in, sexuality, teen pregnancy, friendship, choice, independence and healing fractured family ties. All of these issues are artfully woven into the story without any preaching. With teen pregnancy on the rise after a 14 year decline, My Life as a Rhombus would make a great discussion book for classrooms, teen book clubs and a great gift idea for parents who want something positive and interesting for their teen to read.

Notorious by Michele Martinez is the fourth novel to feature
Martinez's heroine, Melanie Vargas. The story begins at full speed as
Vargas, meets with the lawyer of the rapper she's trying to put away
for murder. The lawyer is killed right in front of Melanie and now her
life is on the line. Come to find out, her relationship with the
lawyer was more than professional and she is determined to find his
killer. But as she searches for answers she realizes there's more to
it all than she can imagine. The deeper she delves the more dangerous
it becomes.
Notorious is a well-written, well-plotted novel that keeps you turning
the pages. Realistic characters and situations make this story edgy,
intriguing and a delight to read. Martinez is an excellent writer and
I can't wait to read more of her work.

For Rhonda Lee math terms are simple. She can easily say “Euclidian dodecahedron” and “deltoidal trihexagonal tiling,” but after a frightening encounter with a rich boy at her prestigious private school in Columbus, she can’t bring herself to say the word pregnant. At the opening of My Life as a Rhombus Rhonda who is a senior in high school has sworn off contact with all boys. Not only that, she has also resolved not to have anything to do with those she deemed as popular, spoiled, stuck up and superficial—like her ex-boyfriend. Instead she’s decided to focus on her studies and getting a much needed scholarship for her dream college—Georgia Tech.
What Rhonda hadn’t counted on was that perhaps some of her postulates were erroneous.
What happens to Rhonda is what happens to all of us when we swear to never do such and such ever again in life. For those who make vows it’s guaranteed that a test of our determination is on the horizon. While working as a tutor for younger children at the West Columbia Community Center, Rhonda is coerced into being a trigonometry tutor for Sarah Gamble, a classmates from her own school. Sarah is a popular cheerleader, daughter of a prominent judge and everything Rhonda is trying to avoid. An unlikely friendship between the two girls develops when Rhonda learns that she and Sarah have more in common than she’d originally thought.
Rhonda’s friendship with Sarah dredges up some unsettled issues Rhonda hadn’t dealt with regarding her own father. And close proximity to Sarah’s handsome brother David, triggers all sorts of complicated emotions and unresolved concerns as well.
Rhonda Lee accurately reflects the mindset of an adolescent female outsider and it was certainly nice to see a smart Black girl as a heroine. One of the things I found interesting about the book is that the author Varian Johnson is a guy! The author interview in the back was a nice touch, providing insight for young readers on how stories are actually written. They don’t just appear from thin air, a writer crafts them through a series of decisions. Johnson had originally attended to write the story from Rhonda’s father’s point of view, but then realized, this was Rhonda’s story to tell.
My Life as a Rhombus has a rather somber feel that is very unlike the other YA titles I’ve read of late. The novel is engaging; however this is not purely a “fun” book. It’s a serious story dealing with issues that are very important to this age group--fitting in, sexuality, teen pregnancy, friendship, choice, independence and healing fractured family ties. All of these issues are artfully woven into the story without any preaching. With teen pregnancy on the rise after a 14 year decline, My Life as a Rhombus would make a great discussion book for classrooms, teen book clubs and a great gift idea for parents who want something positive and interesting for their teen to read.

White Lines is the story of Jada who leaves home at sixteen to escape abuse from her Mother’s boyfriend who turns her eventually to prostitution. She ends up in a relationship with Born, the local druglord and lives a life of money, parties and the good life. But Jada becomes addicted to crack despite Born’s warnings that it would end their relationship. Jada’s addiction brings her to a relationship with Jamari, Born’s rival and pregnancy. Losing everything, Jada with the help of Sunny, the wife of Born’s supplier, finds her way back, but not without having to boldly navigate the world of gangs, drugs and murder without getting caught. A realistic, fast paced read!

What would you like readers to take away from your book?
There are six books which I have written and each book is different from one another. As the title of the book will say, the first book which I wrote was about the collection of articles and columns which were published in the National newspaper of Nepal, The Kathmandu Post and The Himalayan Times. In addition, there were many opinions which were written for the book in “Nature God” (2008), My Second book entitle, and “Human behavior on the Internet” (2009) is a book crafted from the Master’s thesis work carried out at Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, where I am currently doing research on anxiety, social engineering and internet technology. The third book entitle “A Very First book of Poems: Heartbreak” (2009) was written when I was personally going through the same in my own life. How does feels when your heart is completely broken? What happens in your heart and mind?. My fourth book was a collected quotes and poems on title, “…109 Quotes, 07 Poems and a song of despair” (2009)…, similarly my fifth book was “20 Love Poems and the Economy Crisis” (2009) and finally the last book on title, “25 Sexy Poems” (2009). In short, I would say readers can take away great inspirations, love and knowledge from my books.
Why did you choose to write this book?
Most of the times, I write for myself, I wrote 20 Love Poems and The Economy Crisis, simply because of love, there is some kind of barrier between those who we love and those with whom we want to stay forever and also because of current recession. In case of love, especially in multicultural environment, I imagined a guy who comes from developing world into the developed world and falls blindly in love with teenager. The problem now is that the guy is adult and the girl is teenager. Especially this circumstance is a great hindrance and barrier in the starting of relationships. Therefore, most of the poems are based on this theme. I choose to write this book for such kind of lovers. In addition for also those lovers who just love and don’t see anything else except love.
What did you learn while writing this book?
I don’t know what I learned maybe courage, enthusiasm and persistence.
What was your favorite scene/chapter from the book?
For writers each character and words are a favorite which is generally true from me as well, but if you want some specific lines for the readers then here is the one stanza from the book.
“So many poems on love,
So few touch me in heart,
I am no poet, life teaches it all
There are thousand love gurus,
There are millions love book,
I am simple ordinary lover,
All I need is, you!”
What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?
What is true for me could be false for others and what is false for others could be true for me. Therefore it depends on every individual taste. Many books are there on how-to-write or many coffee table books but I think those are just useless. Just follow your heart with love, courage and persistence. Finally, Writing is …… (Fill in the blank yourself.), Similar to love.
What is the best lesson you have learned from another writer?
I can write.
What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?
To Selling your book, marketing and finding traditional publishers.
What is something readers would be surprised you do?
I can write 54 poems in two days and create a book.
What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
1. I will end up writing six books currently living here in Finland within two years of time.
2. I would work in Nokia Research Center, Helsinki as a trainee and lose it all over again.
3. I will travel 500 kilometers like a crazy guy just to see someone who likes me a lot.
How do you reach new readers?
Social networking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads and Youtube. Sometimes I give away my books to friends and relatives in certain occasions and festivals.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
William Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda and Paulo Coelho
William Shakespeare for his work on Romeo and Juliet, Personally I would like to talk with him did he had such experience himself or was his just imagination? Secondly with Pablo Neruda because of his desperate melancholy tones in most of his poems And Finally, Great Paulo Coelho simply because of his inspirations and support for all new writers like me.

Now, my seventh book could be semi-autobiography of myself from traditional publisher or else it could also be a collection of poems from self publisher Lulu.com But I don’t know yet. I believe every book has the beginning and end and when the life will begin for the book even creator does not know sometimes. It is just out there somewhere in the air, it has to come in my mind and then slowly the fingers will automatically start moving along the keyboards which will create the yet another book for readers.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Mesha Coleman
Mesha is originally from Oklahoma City, OK. She credits her creativity to God and her strong matriarchic linage. Each woman in her family has both a creative spirit and the tenacity to withstand any obstacle they face. Some authors are born to write while others acquire a love for writing along life’s journey. Author Mesha Coleman has always loved to write poetry but not until attending a spoken word event was she inspired to write a play which turned into her first novel "A Big Girls Blues". What would you like readers to take away from your book?
I want readers to be inspired to look within themselves and pursue their dreams and goals. I want readers to learn to love themselves from the inside out. I would like readers to see themselves for the wonderfully made individuals that God created them to be.
Why did you choose to write this book?
I was inspired by a poem that I heard at a spoken word event. The book was initial a play but after a good friend read the play for inspiration for a book she said I should turn it into a book so after that A big Girl’s Blues was born.
What did you learn while writing this book?
The editing portion is very difficult especially when you are doing it yourself. Also it is very hard to write in 1st person.
What was your favorite scene/chapter from the book?
My favorite scene is when Jasmine overhears her husband praying. It was very important for me to portray a strong, supportive male figure, similar to my father and husband.
What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?
It’s truly hard to sit down and just write.
What is the best lesson you have learned from another writer?
Pat Simmons has been very helpful in recommending different types of promotional material.
What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?
Staying true to who I am and what I want portrayed in my writing. I want my writing to be a legacy to my children. I want my mother and father to be proud of what they read from me and knowing the type of morals that I’ve been raised with and I want that to be reflected in my writing.
What is something readers would be surprised you do?
I am a very adventurous soul. I recently bungee jumped!
What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
Really, this has been a roller coaster ride. I didn’t really have any expectation. So currently I don’t have any regrets, I’m just enjoying the ride.
How do you reach new readers?
Most of my exposure is a result of word of mouth. Because this is my first book I am still learning the ropes regarding promotions.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
I am a big fan of Nora Roberts and Jacqueline Thomas.
Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?
Share your writings with friends and family. Get opinions from any one that will provide one. The more eyes the better. Don’t limit yourself. Open your mind, dig deep and let your creative juices flow freely.

PART 3: ABOUT THE BOOK
Tell us about 'Til Debt Do Us Part. How did you come up with ideas for this book?
I have always made an effort to write books about people experiencing real life issues. I know that many people suffer from gambling addiction, so I decided to write about that. Shortly after I began writing the book, I participated in an online bookclub meeting and sure enough the readers mentioned gambling as an issue they'd like to see in a book.
Who are your main character(s)?
My main characters in Til Debt Do Us Part are Nichole and Jeffrey Singleton. They are in near their late twenties and have been married for nearly five years.
Did you have a favorite character(s)? Who and why?
My favorite character in Til Debt Do Us Part was Nikki's best friend Maya. She had major issues with her life but still remained a positive supportive friend to Nikki.
Did you have to do quite a bit of research for this novel?
Yes, there was research involved while I was writing Til Debt Do Us Part. I actually visted a few casinos, not for gambling purposes but to observe customers. I think I described how I think I gamblers feel about winning and losing at the beginning of the book. I also researched Gambler's Anonymous and gambling addiction statistics.
What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading 'Til Debt Do Us Part?
I'd like readers to take from the story that no matter how insurmountable an issue or crisis may be, that God is still on your side and he will help you weather the storm.
Okay, a not-so-fun question. How important are reviews to you as a writer?
Reviewers are important to me and I am sure other writers as well because they help gauge a writer's skills. Reviewers that take a fair approach usually stress the negatives and positives of a book. Reviews influence readers as to whether or not they may purchase a book. I place just as much emphasis on reader feedback which I get a fair amount of. I feel between the reviewer and reader I will get a fair assessment of my writing.

Looking for an Agent?

Within the literary industry, the do’s and don’ts for each step toward publication will vary from person to person.
One of the most hotly debated subjects is the necessity of a literary agent. Pondering this alone can be a tremendous undertaking for most. Questions to be asked are broad and can enhance rather than relieve your anxiety.
Before one can delve into a possible search for an agent, it would be prudent to know what the function of this literary professional is.
After speaking with literary agents, I have composed their agreed upon definition of their position and their primary functions on the author’s behalf. The consensus is that a literary agent is one who, on behalf of their client, negotiates the best contract they can with publishing companies. Depending upon the client/representative relationship, negotiations can extend to the securing of public appearances and collaboration on other projects.
Typical Agent Services Include:
Determining the viability of a manuscript
Creating a manuscript proposal
Vetting viable avenues for sending manuscript
Negotiating the sell of manuscript to publisher
Helping author develop a career strategy
Cultivating and pursuing other options for author
Keeping current with and updating client of industry trends
What an agent earns (commission) varies from conversation to conversation.
Typically, it is agreed that 10% to 20% is considered the norm. This percentage comes from the author’s earnings and is applied to income spelled out in the agreed upon contract. Agents asking for payment in advance are not considered reputable and should be eliminated from your list of possibilities.
Being the research queen that I am, I compiled a list of the most common responses from authors and other industry professionals regarding literary agents.
Reasons to Have an Agent
The majority of the larger publishing houses only accept agented manuscripts.
Agents tend to know what type of manuscript a house is looking for.
An agent has a better understanding of the industry’s processes and contract language.
Because the agent is commission based they will work diligently to secure the best contract.
Reasons Not to Have an Agent
Many authors have published without the services of an agent.
Not having an agent minimizes the outgo from your writing income.
Avenues for submissions are not as hard to find as they once were.
Please note that the information above is not comprehensive, but does give the seeking author options to consider. The decision to obtain the services of an agent is one that should be given careful consideration. Determining what your need is should be the first consideration. Do not be in a hurry and definitely ask questions of those with good and bad experiences.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?
Round the Clock is the fourth and final book in my Black Stockings Society Series about four women, one club and a secret that will make all their fantasies come true. First I hope they come away entertained because that’s my primary goal, but I would also hope Anna Marie’s success at love--despite the external and internal trials she faces--will prove inspiring for readers who want to follow their hearts.
Why did you choose to write this book?
In all honesty, this book chose me. Anna Marie came to me as a fully formed character with a story to tell. Fortunately, her story fit into the series framework and I hope completed it on a high note. Also I incorporated my ‘What if’ strategy. What if a woman is someone by day and someone else by night and gets a chance to change it all? Round the Clock became one answer to that question.
What did you learn while writing this book?
I learned that finishing a series is bittersweet. There are characters who I will miss and other ideas that I could develop, but it’s time to start something new and I’m ready.
What was your favorite scene/chapter from the book?
I have many favorite scenes and chapters because I truly enjoyed Anna Marie and Desmond and the people who are in their lives. However, what stands out for me is when after years of fantasizing about her high school crush, Desmond Rockwell, Anna Marie sees him again.
What is the toughest test you’ve faced as a writer?
Balance and endurance. Balancing the creative aspect of being a ‘writer’ (drafting the work, meeting deadlines, edits, copyedits etc…) and the business aspect of being an ‘author’ (marketing, promotion, taxes etc…). Marrying the two realms continues to be a struggle and enduring the hard knocks (nasty reviews, rejections—yes you can still get rejected after being published—and other disappointments). But I enjoy what I do so I take it all in stride (after throwing a well deserved tantrum) and go on.
What is something readers would be surprised you do?
Sometimes I give a story a musical theme. I enjoy a variety of musical styles so I may give one story an Afro-Brazilian theme, and another a country theme and another may be based on alternative rock. These styles don’t necessarily influence the rhythm and flow of the story--but may relate to a character or a plot point or just the setting. I find it fun.
How do you reach new readers?
I use a three-dimensional approach that includes unique efforts on the internet, my website, and off-line efforts. Also opportunities like this interview (thanks) I hope will introduce me to new readers.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
Only three? Yikes! Well, let me see, I’ll probably change my mind in the next hour, but off the top of my head I’d say William Shakespeare, because he was able to entertain the masses through low and high humor, and he shone a light on the truth of humanity that has lasted centuries. The second writer would be Andrew Davies because he’s prolific and writes in various venues such as TV, the stage, cinema and novels. He has translated many classics (i.e. Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch, Little Dorrit, Bridget Jones’ Diary) to the screen with amazing results. It takes a clever writer to take a story from one medium (i.e. books) to another (i.e. TV). Lastly, I would want to talk to Langston Hughes because I’m impressed with his themes and style.
Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?
The one ‘do’ would be: Write. It amazes me how many aspiring writers talk about writing, read about writing, think about writing, but don’t sit down and write. It’s one of the easiest arts to begin. So do it! Write. For a minute or five hours it doesn’t matter. Just write consistently and you’re a writer.
The one ‘don’t’ would be: Don’t look for a blue-print to success in this field. No matter how many people you listen to, or read about, or conferences or workshops you go to, you will not find a road-map to success. Everyone reaches his or her destination in different ways. Listen to suggestions, but trust your instincts and discover your own path.

Number one rule: NEVER PAY AN AGENT. The money flows to you, the author. Any agent asking for reading fees, editing fees, referral fee or anything similar is not the agent for you. Also shy away from agents who say they ‘specialize’ in new authors. They are usually fee-charging as well. Reputable agents have a mixture of both new authors and established authors.
Finding a good agent basically comes down to research. Do your homework. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has a great page about literary agents and what to look out for. I also have several links on my site as a strong starting point. Invest your time in finding the right match, so you won’t regret your choice in the end. A known truth in the industry is not having an agent is better than having a bad agent.
Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?
My next book is called Words of Seduction and is scheduled to be released next year, March 2010. It’s about a former housewife turned hot-shot novelist who returns to her small town, stirs things up with the town’s former bad boy, and gets the town talking.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Liz Johnson
Liz Johnson grew up reading Christian fiction, and always dreamed of being part of the publishing industry. After graduating from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff with a degree in public relations, she set out to fulfill her dream. In 2006 she got her wish when she accepted a publicity position at a major trade book publisher. While working as a publicist in the industry, she decided to pursue her other dream-becoming an author. Along the way to having her novel published, she completed the Christian Writers Guild apprentice course and wrote articles for several magazines.
Liz lives in Colorado Springs , Colorado , where she enjoys theater, ice skating, volunteering in her church's bookstore and making frequent trips to Arizona to dote on her nephew and three nieces. What would you like readers to take away from your book?
I hope that readers of my book are encouraged to rely on God even when friends and family let them down. I hope that like Kenzie and Myles do in the book, readers will find hope in knowing that God is walking with them in hard times and that His eyes are on those that fear Him.
Why did you choose to write this book?
I’m not so sure that I chose to write this book so much as I suddenly had a story to tell, and this was it. I had been through some major upheaval in my life, moving 1100 miles twice in just 6 months. I had lost a job and was several states away from my family, my support group. And at that time, I realized that I had no one to lean on but God. And in that moment, I knew that I wanted to tell a story about God’s never-ending protection and faithfulness.
What did you learn while writing this book?
Because I could go on for pages about what I learned, I’ll stick to one thing. I learned to let go. I spent months writing my “baby.” Every writer knows that feeling of giving birth to a manuscript. And it’s hard to give it over to someone else and let them chop it apart, even if that person is a professional editor. But with every suggestion I took, I found my grasp loosening just a bit. I discovered that I had done my very best, but it could never get any better if I held it too closely, afraid of taking feedback. Letting go was the best thing that ever happened to my manuscript.
What was your favorite scene/chapter from the book?
I probably have a hundred favorite scenes! But if I have to pick one, I do love the scene with the mountain lion. I joke with my writing buddy that all of my books should have a chase scene through the woods and a mountain lion attack. When Myles and Kenzie have to face a cougar in the Oregon mountains, my heart always pounds. Plus, it’s a really funny moment between Kenzie and Myles. We see her nervous and rambling, and then we see Myles being sarcastic and funny even in the face of danger. I love their dynamic at that moment.
What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?
It’s a commitment that requires sacrifice, especially if you have a day job. Writing means giving up nights out with friends. It means turning down dinner invitations to meet goals and deadlines. It means saying no to things that I really want to do. I wish non-writers understood that I when I decline to spend time with them because I need to write, it’s not personal. It’s about my writing, which really is personal to me.
What is the best lesson you have learned from another writer?
One of my favorite nonfiction authors is Mark Batterson, the pastor of National Community Church in Washington , DC . I’ve had the pleasure of working with him in my day job, and last summer we talked about one of the concepts he discussed in his book Wild Goose Chase. Mark says that it’s really easy to pray and just keep praying, waiting for God to answer. But at some point we need to recognize when He’s given us the means to accomplish what we’re asking for and act on it. That’s really applicable to me and probably many other writers. We sit and pray for God to give us the words, but we end up waiting, failing to act on the talents He’s given us. So I’ve learned to pray for the words, but I know when to stop praying and start typing.
What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?
It’s the same test I face every day. Discipline. Sitting down and actually writing isn’t easy, and I face the decision every day. Will I write or not? It continues to be struggle, and it’s the true test of if I’m a real writer or just playing at it when I want to. Right now I’m between projects and I tend to lose that battle most days. My goal is to someday win more days than not.
What is something readers would be surprised you do?
Hmm … I don’t think I’m that surprising. I suppose some might be surprised that I go to live sporting events every chance I get. I love hooting and hollering at football, hockey, and minor league baseball games. And I follow the NFL pretty closely all through the season.
What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
I wish I’d known that I could this, that I had the confidence follow my dreams. I wish I’d known that it won’t ever by easy and that dedication is required. Most of all I wish I’d known that my first, second, third and fourth books don’t have to be perfect. Every writer has room for improvement.
How do you reach new readers?
Well, as a new writer, all of my readers are new to me. But I’ve started blogging regularly, offering my take on pop culture and such. Some of my visitors have said they’ll be picking up my book in July. I’ve also entered several short story writing contests that have brought people to my blog when they read my entries. But the best thing I’ve found is word of mouth. I gave early manuscripts to some trusted friends, who gave great feedback and are now my biggest fans. They tell their friends, and the word is spreading.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
Elizabeth George Speare, author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, is one of my all-time favorite authors, and I would love to ask her about her life and the research she did for her books way before the internet. L.M. Montgomery because I want to hear about her brainstorming sessions about Anne. Where did the red-headed orphan come from? Was she always so wonderfully precocious? And definitely, I’d invite J.K. Rowling. Where does an author go after the stunning success of Harry Potter? What were the adult lives of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny really like?
Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?
Do write what you’re passionate about. Just because a certain genre or style is popular, doesn’t mean you absolutely have to follow the pack. Your writing will be smoother and more enjoyable to read when it’s from your heart.
Don’t be afraid of rejection. My first rejection letter for The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn was actually the beginning of my journey with this book. I sent a “thank you” note to the editor, and she said if I could fix a few things, she’d be happy to see me resubmit. I did, and received another rejection and another list of suggestions. If I wanted to resubmit, they’d be happy to reconsider. We went back and forth 4 times. Four letters with no promise of a contract. It wasn’t ideal at the time, but rejections don’t have to be scary. You never know what door they’ll open.

Since finishing that manuscript, I’ve been working on a proposal for a contemporary romance set in my home state of Arizona . I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens with both of these stories.

Tell us about The Devil is a Lie.
It is about a woman who wins the lottery and when she goes to claim her winnings, her ex husband shows up – with the woman he left her for- and informs her that their divorce was never finalized and they want half.
How did you come up with the idea for this book?
I was visiting a bookclub when one of the members started telling a story about how she and her husband were divorced three years before they found out because of paperwork error their divorce was never finalized. Later that evening I was having a conversation with a friend, telling her about the bookclub meeting. She was intrigued and decided to look into her own divorce and lo and behold, contrary to her belief her divorce was never finalized either. Since I’m a ‘what if’ person, all I could think was What if my friend had won the lottery (we both play a lot)….and the story took off from there.
Who are your main character(s)?
Nina Lawson, her fiance’ Rick Henderson. Her not-so-ex, Todd Lawson and his money-hungry girlfriend Pam.
Did you have a favorite character(s)? Who and why?
I love Pam because she was the total opposite of me.
Did you have to do quite a bit of research for this novel?
I did research lottery rules and regulations, stories on lottery winners and divorce. I was so surprised to see the number of people who, for one reason or another, never get their divorces finalized.
What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading The Devil is a Lie ?
To discern that true wealth lies in your heart.
Okay, a not-so-fun question. How important are reviews to you as a writer?
I like reviews because we are a word of mouth people and that’s the best way to spread the word about a good book. I do not like reviews if they are not constructive.

In Memory Of Michael J. Jackson
Today we say goodbye. The tears are still there, but a sense of peace and beautiful memories feel my heart.
I send out my deepest sympathy to the Jackson family and to his friends and fans.
I wanted to share a post I did for the readersroom.com . It says a little about how I felt about Michael and his music.
NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE
When I think of music and the part it's played in my life, one name always comes up -Michael Jackson. I can’t imagine my life without his music. His songs will forever hold special memories for me.
My first concert was a Jackson 5 concert. I was five years old and excited see my boyfriend Michael Jackson live. I remember dancing in the aisle and singing along with my favorite singer.

As a teenager I begged my mother to attend the Victory tour, of course she couldn’t get tickets it was sold out. So we had to settle for listening to the live version on the radio. We screamed like we were there in person.

Right on the scene
When Michael moon walked across the stage we were right in front of the T.V. clapping like we were in the audience too. He mesmerized us.
My favorite music video as a teen was Thriller. My sisters and I watched it a million times until we memorized the words. We are the World touched our hearts.
My single years in the Navy I danced to MJ’s music and just a few months ago I introduced my children to some of his famous videos. I wanted them to share in the memories of my favorite singer.
My heart ached when I finally let it sink in that we would no longer have the gifted singer, song writer, dancer to grow old with. What would the music world be like without him?
No, I didn’t know Michael personally, but I knew his music and it inspired me to dream big.
To all those who loved Michael and his music, he leaves a legacy of wonderful songs to inspire another generation.

Do believe in yourself and your gift. Believe in your own self-worth, irregardless of what people say or do.
Don't do this all by yourself. Lean on others that are strong in the areas in which you are weak. Work with others who respect you, and those you can respect.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
1. That everyone gets nervous when writing their first book.
2. That what seems obvious to me now may be impactful to someone else.
3. I should not minimize what I say, as long as it's a blessing to someone else.
How do you reach new readers?
Word of mouth, mostly. And through our wife-in-waiting events.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
Maya Angelo -- because she's so authentic to herself
Michelle McKinney Hammond -- because she's meant so much to Christian single women, and is an inspiration to me.
Jack Canfield -- he's put together books (Chicken Soup for the Soul) that are simple, yet have blessed millions.
Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?
Do believe in yourself and your gift. Believe in your own self-worth, irregardless of what people say or do.
Don't do this all by yourself. Lean on others that are strong in the areas in which you are weak. Work with others who respect you, and those you can respect.

Our theme for this month is REACHING YOUR GOALS. What steps should a writer take to reach their goals?
Write everyday, and work with an editor/critique group to perfect your writing voice. There is nothing like being understood by your readers.
Get your writing into the hands of someone who can take your message to your target audience. If you can do the job, self-publish your work or begin a blog. If you don't have the resources, send your writing to editors/publishers who do have the resources.
Thank the Lord each day for your gift, and walk through every door He opens for you.

My next book will discussion the qualities of a Godly wife, unless there is more to be said for Christian single women.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Lizzette G. Carter
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Lizzette Grayson Carter, has always had a passion for literature and started writing in her first year of high school. After high school, she left The Big Apple to attend Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia and majored in English Education with a minor in Spanish. Following college, Carter entered the workforce and with her passion still in her along with her keen interest in the complexities of race and interracial relationships, started The Color Line.
The Color Line, a contemporary romance novel about a black woman’s struggle with being in an interracial relationship – with her boss, nonetheless, was a fantastic debut for Carter. It was the June 2005 Black Expressions Book Editor’s Choice, published in exclusive hardback edition cover and sold out in a short period of time. It exceeded her expectations even further, by going into its second print in mass market paperback in November of 2007.
Now, as a full-time author, with the release of Across The Color Line, the much anticipated sequel to The Color Line, Carter brings the issues of race and the internal struggles of an interracial relationship to the forefront. Carter has launched her own audio book, book publishing and print on demand company, and is working on the screenplay for Across The Color Line. She continues to travel near and far for book events, lectures, speaking engagements, conferences and book club meetings.
She is a resident of Mathews County, Virginia and lives with her husband, Michael and daughter, Brienna. She continues to devote her time to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her church and many other Christian engagements.
Across The Color Line
Lacie, a black woman and Tony a white man are at the beginning of their interracial relationship. They’re happy and very much in love, but things sour once Lacie meets Tony’s mother, Abigail. Adding to the problem, is a black male co-worker, Trevor Weeks, who is constantly harassing Lacie for being with Tony while ironically trying to steal her away from him. But the real twist is when Lacie’s ex-fiancé, Joe returns with a deep secret…and he’s the same guy that she originally broke up with to be with Tony and he’s also Tony’s best friend!
So…with all of the problems at the cusp of their relationship, will Lacie and Tony’s relationship survive Across The Color Line?
What would you like readers to take away from your book?
“Across The Color Line” is an emotionally charged novel and I want readers to take their emotion and the message they’ll get from the novel and act on it positively.
Why did you choose to write this book?
I chose to write “Across The Color Line” because race, color and interracial relationships are still controversial issues - even in today’s time and this country has wounds from the past that have yet to heal.
What did you learn while writing this book?
I learned that nothing is impossible with God; I was faced with many challenges as a writer during the creation of “Across The Color Line” and I was constantly in prayer.
What was your favorite scene/chapter from the book?
My, there are so many scenes that I love in “Across The Color Line” , but I’ll pick Chapter 38 – The Wedding. There is a part in that chapter that is so funny - and very creative, I might add. I get so tickled every time I read it.
What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?
I’d like for other non-writers to understand that writing is just as creative as any of the other arts – music, acting, dancing, sculpting, animation.
What is the best lesson you have learned from another writer?
The best lesson I’ve learned from another writer is that when writing fiction – anything goes when it’s in the mind of the writer. Although it might not be possible in reality.
What is the toughest test you've faced as a writer?
The toughest tests I faced would undoubtedly be overcoming rejection – especially when I first started out. But prayer, resilience and support from family and friends is what I used (and still use today), to combat it.
What is something readers would be surprised you do?
Readers might be surprised that I own my own publishing, and print-on-demand company. We actually make our own books.
What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?
There are some things that I wish I’d have known, but the reality is that without those test and trials I could not have grown to where I am now.
How do you reach new readers?
I usually reach new readers from touring and attending events.
If you could have dinner with 3 authors to talk with about their writing (living or deceased) who would you invite and why?
I’d love to have dinner with James Baldwin because just as I did, he confronted race and prejudice in his works.
I’d love to have dinner with Langston Hughes, because he’s one of my most admired poets of the Harlem Renaissance. I read his poem “Mother to Son” for a contest in sixth grade and know how to recite it verbatim to this day.
I’d love to have dinner with Terry McMillan because she had an influence on me becoming a writer with her usage of ‘first person’ in her novels.
Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?
Do a lot of research into the writing business and don’t ever give up!

TURNING JAPANESE
Meet Lisa Falloya, an aspiring half-Japanese, half-Italian American manga artist who follows her bliss by moving to Tokyo to draw the Japanese-style comics she's been reading for years. Leaving behind the comforts of a humdrum desk job and her workaholic fiancée, Lisa has everything planned-- right down to a room with a nice Japanese family-- but hasn't taken into account that being half-Asian and enthusiastic isn't going to cut it. Faced with an exacting boss and a conniving "big fish" manga author, Lisa risks her wedding, her friends, and her fears for a shot at making it big.
Cathy Yardley needs to get out more. When not writing or playing with her son, she is probably cruising the Internet, sleeping or watching D-list movies and adding to her unnatural mental store of character-actor trivia. She can hum along with all the theme songs on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" and is learning Japanese from anime. She considers Daria a positive role model. Her family is considering performing an intervention for her addiction to pop culture. Email any time... she ought to be sleeping, but let's face it. She's online. :)
What would you like your readers to take away from your book?
I'd like readers to understand what it's like to be mixed-race, and how attitude in life is more important than anything.
If you could have a conversation with one of your characters who would it be and why?
This is going to sound like a total cop-out, but writing the novels is like having a conversation with my characters. So it's not something I've ever thought about. I'd like to have drinks with the main character, Lisa... especially at Comic-Con!
What was your greatest roadblock, and how did you overcome it?
I suffer from writer's block periodically -- usually when I'm not taking care of myself, or when I just need to take time to figure out what I really want to communicate. That's always rough. The best answer has been to be with writer friends, improve my health, have lots of quiet time and replenishing activities to "refill the well", and to just have faith that the block will go away. It always does.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
That if you write because you want to be successful, a block the size of a semi is probably waiting in the wings to wallop you. Not that there's anything wrong with success, per se. But if you lose sight of your love of a great story, and wanting to share that great story, then I think your muse tends to take a hike until you come to your senses.
What's your secret to balancing career and family?
Again, make sure I have at least a little time to myself, or else I can't take care of anything -- not the family, not the books. And I've got the slogan "progress not perfection" taped to my wall.
