FEATURED AUTHOR: Keith Thomas Walker

Keith Thomas Walker is a graduate of Texas Wesleyan University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English. He enjoys reading, poetry, and music of all genres. Keith currently works in administration at one of the city’s largest hospitals. He lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife and two children. Keith is the author of Fixin’ Tyrone, How to Kill Your Husband, A Good Dude, Riding the Corporate Ladder, and The Finley Sisters Oath of Romance. Visit him at http://www.keithwalkerbooks.com/.

How did you start out your writing career?

My writing career officially started with my first published novel, Fixin’ Tyrone, in November 2009. But unofficially it started decades before that. I was always a creative student, from grade school through college. I published my first poem when I was in high school, and I began winning awards for short stories and essays during that time. I wrote my first book in 1996. That was a rough, street novel called Colored Rags. Try as I might, I couldn’t find a publisher interested in that book. I tried for two years, and then I think I became depressed with writing, and I didn’t write anything else for more than a decade.

I got pulled back into writing in 2006. The first thing I did was re-write Colored Rags. But, once again I couldn’t generate much interest. A friend suggested I change the whole genre and style of my stories, and I gave it a shot. I wrote Fixin’ Tyrone in 2008. A few publishers were interested, but I didn’t want to make the same mistakes I made in college. I knew that the best way to increase my changes of getting published was to produce more work, so I wrote nine books in the next two years. The outcome has been very positive.

What did you learn while writing this book?

While writing my most recent book, Riding the Corporate Ladder, I learned that sex may get the books off the shelves, but it’s the story that keeps the readers coming back to you. I believe that there’s constant competition in the romance genre. Some authors feel the need to up the ante, so to speak, to produce something that’s wilder and crazier than the current bestsellers. In the process, the actual story suffers in some cases. That said, Riding the Corporate Ladder is the sexiest book I’ve ever written, but main and side-stories are just as appealing.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

My number one goal with any book is to entertain. But while being entertained, I want the reader think about certain things. I always have a message. Sometimes the message is subtle, like the antics of a random crackhead character. Sometimes the message is more in your face, like a main character suffering an overdose. My books would suffer if I got on the soap box about things I believe in, but it’s not hard to hit your reader with a subliminal. Like if the main character uses a condom. I don’t have to say that the AIDS rate among minorities is too damned high. I simply introduce a condom to the scene. With any of my books, my goal is to challenge the reader to think about things.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

Lol. Now that you mention it, one of the characters in Riding the Corporate Ladder is the random crackhead I was just talking about. He reminds me of some folks I used to know.

What has surprised you most about becoming a published author?

The biggest… Hmm. To be honest, all of my “surprises” were negative, so I’ll tell you about the most exciting things I experienced. Like when I saw my book on the shelf at Walmart. That was one of the best days of my life. Also when I had my first book signing at Barnes & Nobles. The response was great. I couldn’t have been happier that day.

What aspect of writing do you love the best, and which do you hate the most?

I love writing the most, and I guess you could say I hate editing. I don’t really hate it, but I want to be as productive as possible, and there’s no way around this fact: If I’m editing a book, I’m not writing a new book. Sometimes my publisher will ask me to revise an upcoming novel, but at the time I’ll be deeply enthralled in a new book I’m working on. It’s hard for me to stop working on my current project. But if you want to be a “real” writer, there’s no way around it.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

I wish I’d known that it’s okay to switch my style to fit the changing needs of the industry. I got bogged down with the failure of the first book I wrote. It didn’t immediately occur to me that I could just write another book. I wish I was better at marketing and promoting myself in the beginning – actually I still need help with that now. I wish I had known that everyone who reaches out to help me does not have my best interests in mind. Some do, but some do not.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

Don’t let the rejection letters get you down. Do get as much feedback as possible when you write a book. Maybe you know ten to twenty people who like to read. Give them copies of your book and pay attention to the critiques you receive. If you don’t know that many readers, join a book club or a writer’s guild and try to introduce your book to these new faces. Feedback from as many sources as possible is very important, especially for a new writer.

If you could be a character from any book you've read, who would you be?

I think I would like to be Lestat from Interview With a Vampire. I know Louis tried to make the vampire life sound horrible, but who wouldn’t want to be an immortal, supernatural being? Sure I’d be a monster, but I could write for centuries upon centuries. Lol.

When you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

When I’m not writing, I love to read. I also like to attend open mic and poetry slam events. Poetry is my first love. I still take the stage every now and then. Even if I don’t perform, I enjoy watching others. There’s a lot of talent in the poetry community. I love the jazz atmosphere, the artsy women, well-spoken brothers. It’s all good. My other hobby is video gaming. Each year I tell myself I’m getting too old for this, but the games keep getting better! I don’t wanna grow up.

What do you do to interact with your readers?

I interact with my readers in a variety of ways. The main thing I do is respond to everyone who sends me a message. It can be time consuming, but I figure if they took the time to read my book and look me up so they can tell me what they thought about it, the least I could do is respond. Plus I really am grateful for every one of my readers. I would feel bad if I didn’t acknowledge them whenever possible. Also I participate whenever I’m asked to be part of a discussion for one of my books. And I have a lot of communication with my readers on facebook.

Our theme for this month is Resources On The Net. What are your favorite resources on the net?

My favorite resources are http://www.aalbc.com/, http://www.theubs.com/, www.blackbooksdirect.com, http://www.amazon.com/, http://www.rawsistaz.com/, http://www.romanceincolor.com/, http://www.fwsoul.com/ and http://www.fwweekly.com/.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

I know that you can do anything you set your mind to. My dad taught me that. I know that no matter how low you sink in life, you can always turn it around. Unfortunately, I had to learn that from personal experience. I know that hope springs eternal in the human breast.

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

My next book is The Finley Sisters Oath of Romance. This may be the best story about sisterhood since Waiting to Exhale. Here is the back cover blurb:

Ten years ago, Mona, Rene and Dawn were the closest and most popular friends at Finley High School. Everyone knew they would be kindred spirits forever, but after graduation the real world lured them in three different directions, and the trio has little contact until their high school reunion. The girls, now women, are instantly inseparable again, but broken promises linger like ghosts from the past. An attempt to recapture the hope and innocence of their youth leads the ladies down a road of discovery that is sometimes hilarious, sometimes sensual, other times dark and painful. And what they thought was their simplest vow, to live love to the fullest, is no easy task for the Finley sisters.

How can readers get in contact with you? (mail, email, website)

We Ain’t the Brontes Blog Tour

About the Author

Rosalyn McMillan is a dedicated wife and devoted mother of four, and grandmother of five, who is currently surviving both rheumatoid arthritis and Alopecia Totalis, a disease that causes bodily hair loss. Rosalyn worked as a sewing machine operator at Ford Motor Company for nineteen years before medically retiring. She used the challenges in her own life as inspiration to become a successful novelist. Rosalyn loves to research newsworthy stories and use them as sub-plots in her real-life novels.
Her first novel, Knowing, debuted as a highly successful initial achievement. Knowing sold over 70,000 hardcover copies and over 400,000 paperbacks. It was a national best-seller and charted admirably on many book lists.

Rosalyn then followed the success of her first book with One Better, then Blue Collar Blues, The Flip Side of Sin. This Side of Eternity was Rosalyn’s fifth novel; the plot centered around the sanitation workers strike in 1968.

Rosalyn remains a loyal student of her profession by reading two to three hundred books a year. She feels that it’s imperative for an author to keep abreast of the New York Times best-sellers as well as fresh voices of fiction.

Currently, she lives in Memphis, TN, with her husband, John, where they relax fishing in their stocked pond.
Some of her favorite authors are John Sanford, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou, John Grisham, Toni Morrison, Eric Jerome Dickey, Kimberla Lawson-Roby and Terry McMillan.

About the Book

The relationship between Charity Evans and her sister Lynzee Lavender brings new meaning to the term “sibling rivalry.” Lynzee writes science fiction, and her New York Times bestseller status gets her into A-list parties and fattens her bank account. She can’t stand the fact that Charity is a published author too, though she swears that Charity is nowhere near as good.

It seems like the publishing industry might agree, because Charity is having trouble getting her contract renewed. Is it possible that Lynzee has had her blacklisted? With her savings dwindling, Charity struggles to pay her bills, and the pressure is putting incredible strain on her marriage. Things only get worse when Lynzee drops a bomb: she reveals that Charity’s husband is the father of a child she gave up for adoption years ago.

Charity’s life goes into a tailspin as she struggles with the shocking news. Should she tell her husband about the child he never knew he had, or would that be more drama than their already fragile marriage can handle? Charity chooses to fight back against her sister in a very creative way, but the fallout from all this drama might leave plenty of casualties in its wake.

Bestselling author Rosalyn McMillan narrates the tale of two literary sisters that will make readers ask: How much of this is based on actual events?

COLUMNIST: Speaking of Words

Speaking of Words—Part 2

Our society is currently enforcing laws and rules against the use of deadly bombs and warfare. Yet, there exists among us a device that can be freely accessed and used by us all on a free-will basis that our government has no real reign over. Words can be a deadly tool or bomb that can shake lives & countries, or they can be a valuable vehicle that bring insight and improve lives. A writer makes the choice of which side of the fence he or she takes with each stroke of the pen and work presented to the audience. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we look to the positive play of words and wisdom that implores us to admire some women writers of yesteryear and of today that bring music to our souls and exciting, electrifying mental chords through the power of the pen and its words.

Take Maya Angelou, for instance. She uses words very elegantly whether in poetry or in story form. We all still revel in the delights of her heart-winning poem entitled “Phenomenal Woman.” A quote from her resonates power in its words: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”

Ms. Alice Walker had this to say: “No person is your friend (or kin) who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow and be perceived as fully blossomed as you were intended.”

And the wisdom and words of Ms. Emily Dickinson still speak to hearts and minds today: “To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else …”

Remember the famous poetic words of Julia Ward Howe in her “Battle Hymn of the Republic”? “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on …” Her words go on and on, words that made not only a difference in Ms. Howe’s life, but the country’s as a whole.
Though not a writer per se, isn’t it delightful when we hear the inspiring words of our First Lady Michelle Obama? Take these powerful words for instance: “We have this window of opportunity; we have a chance to make something real happen. Something possible happen, to live beyond our fear—think about that, and help us. Help lift us up, help us fight this fight to change,—transform—this country in a fundamental way. This chance won’t come around again.”

Did not these women think about which words to use before creating these statements and works? Of course they did. We must too as writers.

It is my opinion that writing and words are a freedom, but the use of them is a responsibility and a privilege to capture an audience. What words are you wielding to your readers? Are you growing them or wasting their time? What message or difference do you want to be your writing legacy that will go down in history for you?
In the book of Genesis when God said, “Let there be light,” in my opinion, it appears that these were the first words of power and direction. Since then, man has set rules and laws using the drum of words and wielding their power and setting direction in many diverse tones for thousands and thousands of years.

While things have changed drastically in the form and usage of language, its dress still wears the same seams of being the good or bad messenger by the hand of its bearer. Of course, there comes a time in every writer’s life when he or she is not writing for pleasure or entertainment but for serious matters. It is still within the dagger of the words that the thoughts, ideas, and opinions either get lost, perceived beyond what was intended, or truly understood.

I believe that writers who have succeeded in being known for their craft and use of exceptional words have a few things in common:

1. They chose the appropriate words to get their point across
2. They wrote using clear sentences
3. They were conscious of making their paragraphs effective
4. They were aware of the basics of grammar, punctuation, and their mechanics
5. They wrote often and continued to hone their craft
6. Dictionaries and writing aids like a thesaurus was used to keep their writing fresh
7. Editing and reediting was a rule and not a decision—this aided against the event of using common, misspelled words and common, confused words.
8. Their work focused on a particular subject
9. Their writing tone was clear and so was the purpose
10. They knew who their audience was and wrote accordingly

These observations can be used in any writing, whether fiction or nonfiction. When sitting down to write you must have a purpose and focus in mind. These two are relative to the outcome of your words and their delivery. Before creating your next essay, novel, of poem, try some of the following and see if it makes a difference in your final delivery.

1. Understand that writing and using the correct words to deliver your thoughts is a process
2. Do some brainstorming about what it is you want to write about
3. Generate some ideas by doing some research about what you plan to write about
4. Start writing about the ideas that come to mind
5. Walk away from your first draft, and then come back with fresh eyes
6. Rewrite your thoughts, getting rid of the clutter—words you don’t need or that don’t drive your point home effectively
7. Like a building, your word structure must be solid
8. Speak to your audience in words that they’ll understand
9. Share your words and works with others and welcome honest feedback
10. Love the power of words and believe in what you want others to gain from you and your thoughts

Remember, history is always in the making for both men and women. The world’s destiny rests on more than just politics, money, and power. Words, too, guide the missile that will explode us to the next level—or continue to propel us downward. Make sure your words are making history that counts.

Pens up! to speaking words the write way.

The Boaz Factor Blog Tour

Looking for Love?

Knowing who Boaz is will free you from looking for love in all the wrong places. You will be encouraged, remembering the priority is not you finding him, but him finding you focused and determined.

Found, but not Chosen?

For women currently in a relationship, knowing who Boaz is will save your heart from putting more time into something that will not materialize.

Based on the Biblical account of Boaz and Ruth, The Boaz Factor…When You Are Ready For the Right One! will take you on a journey of self-discovery, highlighting why we hurt from past relationships and why we continue in a cycle of false relationships that we desire to be real.

With this revolutionary new book, Elder Brenda Bradley uses The Boaz Factor to break through the barriers of how and why we end up in the relationships that break our hearts. Grounded in scripture, truth and past experiences, The Boaz Factor will first help you to see truths that shift the paradigm of your relationships. Then, through practical, hands on application, Elder Brenda Bradley gives you a new plan to obliterate the cycle!

The Boaz Factor… When You Are Ready For the Right One! (118 Pages, paperback, ISBN 978-0-9826242-2-7, $14.99) will be released on March 20, 2011 by Ellechor Publishing House, LLC.

Book Excerpt

When I was younger, I dealt with a relationship or rather a non-relationship that I thought was a relationship. I know it sounds confusing but let me explain. I had been through almost every phase imaginable for a relationship to go through and yet it was a non-relationship relationship. After awhile I refused to talk about it, because whenever I did, I couldn’t justify why I even put up with it.

“We are ‘together.’ Well, no not really.” I’d try to explain. You see there was something there, but it couldn’t be described. We just knew that it was real and that it took precedence over anything or anyone else because we meant so much to each other. We were friends, but so much more than that. We were soul mates who couldn’t seem to commit to a relationship.

The feelings were so deep, yet it was not enough to join our lives together. It was magnetic when we were in the same room, but not right for the time being. It didn’t need to be talked about or identified all the time because we were too mature for that. We knew it was forever, because it will never be over until we finally got together…which leaves the huge question in the atmosphere of when will that be?

Do these mixed emotions sound familiar? If so, you are simply in a non-relationship relationship, a relationship without commitment. Although it seems to be everything at the time, something that you can build your life on, these kinds of relationships will only amount to insanity.

–Excerpt from Chapter 4: Want vs. Choice

Author Biography

With over 20 years of experience, Elder Brenda Bradley’s approach to relationship counseling is grounded by the Word. Quickly establishing herself in the industry through her wit and down to earth teaching style, Pastor, Teacher, Playwright and Mentor, Elder Bradley makes the subject matter so simple “a baby could understand it!”

Her message is simple: You don’t have to invest your heart in something that will never give you back what you put in!

Interview with Brenda

What compelled you to write The Boaz Factor: When You Are Ready For The Right One?

I was fascinated with the current state of relationships, the obvious change in how relationships progress, and what we as women have chosen to put up with in order to keep a person (a man) in our lives.

Of all the relationships in the Bible, why choose Boaz & Ruth?

Ruth is one of my favorite people as well as one of my favorite books of the Bible. Therefore, as I studied her, the Lord shined the light on them. I had never heard a Bible lesson or a sermon on Boaz. Nor had I seen or done a study on them in a relationship setting. It was time to create one!

What Insight does the book give on relationships?

It defines what type of relationship we are in as well as the relationship we should expect. It provides key principles to us as to whether or not we are investing ourselves into someone who is not ready to give us a corresponding return.

What are the signs of a Boaz man?

Signs of a Boaz man include his attention to details concerning his woman, and his mindset about the future. His conversation is different, focused and empowering. There are Seven Principles that I discuss in my book and on my blog that break this question down further.

5. How do you know if you are a woman “Boaz”?

If you are carrying the weight (making whatever is wrong right) in your relationship. You initiate most of your time together and what you do, your efforts, is what is holding the relationship together…You are a woman “Boaz”.

6. What kind of lesson can we learn from Leah and Jacob, a well-known, failed relationship in the Bible that you mention in your book?

Though Leah’s father tricked Jacob into marrying her, she still attempted to make the marriage work. Unfortunately, she went into the relationship knowing he would never love her as he loved Rachel. She thought by giving him children that he would change his mind about her. Nevertheless, child after child, his heart did not change. If on day one, you know in your heart that you are going to have to work hard and convince this person that you are the one he “should” love, walk away. No matter what you do, or what you give, it will never be enough.

What should women DO after reading this book?

Be empowered to walk away from a “non-relationship” relationship. Pursue the thing that God has gifted you to do. By focusing on your purpose, plan and passion, it will take you places and introduce you to people you have yet to meet. THAT is when Boaz will find you!

Running Scared Blog Tour

About the Author

Robert Leon Davis was a respected police officer in New Orleans, who became involved in crime and fled arrest, living rough in the backwoods of America and Canada for over two decades before handing himself in. He now has an extensive speaking and teaching ministry.

Tell us about Running Scared.

“Running Scared" is a true life story of my life 30 years ago. It's the story of a former young police officer who found himself on the wrong side of the law in 1979. After committing a crime, he was arrested, then fled, and became one of America's longest running fugitives; for a period of 22 years. Eventually, after a revelation from God, I decided to voluntarily "surrender", first to God, and later to the authorities. Today, I travel the country speaking to police, schools, and churches about the power of God to "reform", as well as well for all to avoid crime and corruption. Profits are donated to various women and children abuse centers across America.

How did you come up with ideas for this book?

Never had to think of any ideas since it's not a novel, but simply my true life journey through life.

Did you have to do quite a bit of research for this book?

Very little research was involved. Again, I simply told my story as I remembered it, and I remembered quite a few details.

What do you hope readers will learn/discover from reading fill-in your book title?

That God still is still "listening" to our prayers, and that no matter what circumstance you find yourself in...God can deliver!

Okay, a not-so-fun question. How important are reviews to you as a writer?

Reviews can be helpful, in that it gives others a "quick view" of a book. It could also help others decide whether the book has merit for them.

About the Book

Robert Leon Davis was a street kid from a tough community. Raised on the brink of poverty, he and his siblings often went hungry, but with the help of a family in the neighborhood, he beat the odds and studied criminal law at Loyola University and joined the New Orleans police department in 1975.

He began his career with aspirations of being a great cop, but before long he was exposed to a darker side of law enforcement. While partnered with a veteran, Davis first witnessed an officer violating the very laws he had vowed to uphold–and he shared in his crime. One compromise led to another, and Davis soon was caught and faced a substantial prison term. Cops in prison don’t last long. He fled.

Davis found himself a fugitive, living off the land in remote forests in the United States and Canada to elude capture. His church upbringing was abandoned in anger. For over twenty years he hid, becoming an expert survivalist. He might still be running, but through a stranger’s prayer the angry atheist realized he was weary of hiding. Slowly he yielded his life to God and eventually gave himself in. But when the New Orleans DA dusted off his file, what would his sentence be?

Today, Robert Davis is a committed Christian and motivational speaker. He uses his extraordinary experiences to share his message of hope and redemption to both adults and children.

Book Trailer

You are an Evangelist and ordained Minister of the Gospel. What prompted you to write this book for women?

Over the years, I’ve shared many of my experiences and testimonies of things that happened to me and others I cross in my daily profession as a medical instructor .I originally wrote a similar book about two
years ago which addressed some of those issues but in this book, I tackle them head on with practical applications for implementation had no idea my mess would someday be a message for others. That’s the Holy Spirit for you. He brings things full circle in your life. Many of us are experiencing a spiritual disconnect in most cases. We believe our problems are carnal rather than spiritual. You want to do the right thing but are confronted with situations that are counter intuitive to all your values, cultural and spiritual, and you have to balance them all. It’s tough. So I wrote Women What the Hell are You Thinking Now? to help women get through the tough days with grace and know that God loves them and is with them no matter what.

What life lessons have you experienced personally that have nurtured and shaped who you are today?

Christians are not immune to the vicissitudes of life. Understanding this reality has helped me cope with the setbacks and unexpected pitfalls I’ve faced. Jesus said we’d have in this world but to be of good cheer because he’d overcome the world (John 16:33). That’s the good news. Christ is with us He never leaves us or forsakes us.

What is, or are, some of the common mistakes, or mis-informed choices that prevent women in developing spiritually, or building positive relationships?

We allow others to define us. Who we are and who we should be rather than looking to the creator for the answer. Many of us have unction or yearning inside about who we are and what we should be doing to build the Kingdom but we allow the enemy to lie to us and convince us otherwise. We forget that with Christ we can do all things and that he can take the foolish things and confound the wise. We are more than conquerors and we shouldn’t allow fear to consume us.

What are you hoping women will take away from your book, i.e., personally, emotionally, and/or spiritually?

I want women to understand how important to they are to God. The Kingdom of God lives within in each of us. Therefore, we already have everything we need to operate in our God given purpose. Once we get that we can truly experience the abundant life God intended for us to have.

What is next for you? Do you have plans to write other devotional/spiritual books, and how can readers reach you?

I plan to continue traveling the country ministering to women and I will continue writing books of inspiration including devotionals, journals, and other inspirational material. Anyone wishing to contact me can do so at cherylspeaks@gmail.com. They can also visit the website

First Chapter

Webster’s defines virtuous as conformity to a standard of right. Most of us have heard of the “Virtuous Woman” found in Proverbs Chapter 31. She’s the pinnacle of Christian womanhood. She’s upright, strong, courageous, wise, and kind. She’s every woman’s model of what a woman should be. She’s faithful and industrious and she fears God. She’s strong and able to endure. She knows when it’s time to watch, when it’s time to fight, and when it’s time to pray. Her self-esteem is high because she knows that she’s a child of the King and that she’s more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ. She believes no weapon formed against her will prosper and God can make her enemies her footstool even in the most trying of circumstances. A virtuous woman would never allow a man to rob her of her dignity or her virtue by sleeping around, acquiescing to domestic violence, or sleeping with him when he’s married. A virtuous woman would know these things are not of God because they demean her self-worth and tear down her communication with the Almighty. A virtuous woman would also be wise enough to know that after everything she’s done, her God is a forgiving God and He’s faithful to His Word.

Women are more than sugar and spice and everything nice. They are fearfully and wonderfully made by God and we women need to learn how to align our view of ourselves with God’s view of us. Far too often we allow the situations in our lives to consume us and tear us down. But this isn’t the will of God for our lives. God’s plans for us are always good and we need to review those plans and incorporate them into our daily living.
Now that we know who we are and whose we are let’s be real. Women, what in the hell are you thinking; and I do mean hell, because the situations we allow ourselves to be placed in are straight from the pit of hell designed by the enemy himself to take us out. They’re planned by the powers and principalities of Satan to undermine the order of God and the woman’s divine position in that order. The Bible is full of strong, righteous, courageous, God fearing, women: Esther, who put her life on the line for her people, Deborah who was a fearless leader, and Hannah who prayed for what she wanted and received favor from God. These were women who were faced with issues of life twists and turns that could’ve surely taken them off course and yet they found a way to seek God’s face and persevere.

Being the backbones of their families we see even in Proverbs 31:13- 27, the bible speaks of the important roles women play in the lives of their families. They’re the caretakers of their homes speaking with wisdom, they set about their work vigorously and their arms are strong for their tasks; yet, many of us suffer with low self-esteem, broken hearts, wounded souls and dead spirits. We don’t live in the glory of our divine placement. We personify an outward appearance of happiness, while living in pure hell on the inside. To the naked eye we seem joyful, courageous and in control while on the inside we’re scared little girls wishing somebody anybody would rescue us. We need to take our lives back. God wants to restore us.

He wants to reconstruct what’s been broken down. What looks like trash in your life can be restored and bring about reformation. You’ve gone through the devastation of divorce, disease, loss of friends, family and finances. You’re looking at what’s left after using external solutions to fix internal chaos and you think it’s all over. Instead of getting to the root of the problem you just prune the outside branches. Leading to our detriment too often we engage in continuous patterns of over eating, indulging in chemical fixes – alcohol, drugs, smoking, over working, using our career as our identity, rescuing people, being a savior, expecting too little, putting up walls, emotional distancing, people pleasing.

Ultimately we suffer from controlling behavior, distrust, perfectionism, intimacy problems. Or even worse we form ungodly attachments to people or mindsets of un-forgiveness, bitterness, malice,

Women what in hell are you thinking now? As long as you allow these things to control your life you’ll be stuck in a never-ending pit that will engulf you and never release you until you realize you are daughters of the King, daughters of the Most High God. It’s time to get rid of the clutter. Don’t be consumed by fear. It’s not of God. Man doesn’t have a heaven or hell to send you to so walking in a place of people pleasing can only hinder you from receiving what God has for you. As long as you keep allowing the same difficulties to consume you your life will be crowded, confused, disordered and full of junk. Don’t be conformed to this world but transform yourself by the renewing of your mind. Get rid of negative self- talk and negative self- images that keep playing themselves over and over in your head. Align yourself with God’s word and see the amazing transformation that can take place in your life. No, this doesn’t mean that every day will be rosy, but your outlook on life, even in trying times, will be joyous because you know that God is still in control even in the midst of your bad circumstances. As long as you trust in Him all things will work together for good.

Trying to push you down life will cause you to face disappointments and setbacks. Feelings of failure will cloud your mind deceiving you into believing you haven’t been forgiven for past failures or sins. Trusting God seems impossible because you still believe He’s forgotten about you in the midst of your troubles. The issues of life; bad news concerning your health, a relationship that went south, all these are setbacks.

Discouragement, loss of enthusiasm, temptation to settle where you are keeps drawing your focus away from the things of God and places it squarely on the things that weigh you down. But if you’re going to see God’s best, you have to have a “bounce-back” mentality. Knocked down, you don’t stay down. You get back up again. You don’t get bitter, you get better. You have to know that every time hardship comes, your setback is a setup for a comeback!

Your spirit man may be trying to get you to commit suicide but in these pages I speak life to your spirit and remind you that God has deposited too much in you for you to die. But Psalm 118:17-says I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. There is kingdom work that must be done and God wants to use you. You must be about your Father’s business!
Pity parties, depression, soaking yourself in the cares of this world blaming everyone else for your problems none of this will get you any closer to the life God has planned for you. The kingdom is waiting for you to position yourself for the greatness God has in store for you. Time is out for sitting and pondering on what you’re going through. Cast your cares upon God, knowing that he cares for you. I Peter 5:7 (KJV).

Everything happens, everything exists, and everything was created to give God glory. Even your struggles are an opportunity for God to get the glory.
Trouble don’t last always! There’s a plan and destiny that God has for you. Chief architect of your life He’s building you up to be all He’s ordained you to be.

God is revealing the glory through your suffering. God is establishing you in the midst of what you’re going through. In the end, it will be worth it!
You are pregnant with purpose, pregnant with greatness. Allow the baby to be born. Don’t permit the enemy to abort the baby. God has deposited something great on the inside of you and it’s time for your delivery! Let the weak say I’m strong and the poor say I’m rich; Rich with the power of the Spirit, Rich with the Word of God, Rich with health, Rich with strength and courage. Take authority over the enemy and declare dominion over everything God has for you. Reclaim your purpose, reclaim your hopes, reclaim your destiny, and reclaim your dreams!

God has a big life for you, one that has peace, joy, and wholeness. His plan includes love and value, purpose and fulfillment, provision and supply. Whatever has caused you to be broken, the areas in your life that aren’t working or are ineffective, the areas where you feel powerless, doing nothing and going nowhere, God wants to put them back together again! But you can’t get to the upper level when you’re stuck on the ground floor.

The pages that follow will speak to the inner recesses of your soul and cause you to really look at yourself in a way that perhaps you’ve never done before. This introspection will cause you to stand up and take notice of the woman that God has called you to be and to never again allow Satan to trick you into the behaviors of the past. Even if you aren’t where you want to be right now don’t despair. God isn’t through with you yet. You are a unique woman with a unique plan designed by God just for you. Women What in Hell are you Thinking Now uses life lessons and biblical principles that will inspire you to walk in the life God has ordained for you. I pray that this book will help you to become whole in your mind, your body, and your spirit

FEATURE AUTHOR: Sean Young

Sean began writing romance at the encouragement of her dear friend Christian Fiction Author Jacquelin Thomas. After the release of her first two novels TOTAL BLISS and WITH THIS RING in 2005 & 2006, Sean continued to work diligently at her craft and her next novel.

FROM THIS MOMENT, the second installment in the Hearts and Flowers Series, was released in January 2011. At an early age, Sean found that she loved words and tried to read everything she could get her hands on. She joined her first book club “Sweet Pickles” at the age of 7. Writing would come later, when she wrote short stories for her own enjoyment, then she wrote the Easter play for the youth at her church at the age of 12.

Sean, a graphic/web designer loves building websites and graphics almost as much as she loves writing her stories. She loves working in her church and lives in Northwest Indiana with her family.

How did you start out your writing career?

That honor goes to my dear friend Jacquelin Thomas. She saw something in me that I didn’t even realize was there. Although I’d been writing since I was young, as I grew older, I got away from it and never thought about being a published romance author.

What did you learn while writing this book?

I learned to work under pressure.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

I wanted anyone who read the book to understand Ivy and her struggles because all of us have thinks in our lives that cause us to reflect and exam ourselves. And also that you can find love in spite of adversity.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

I actually loved writing Jonathan Damon (my hero). I loved seeing him on page as a lovable black man who loved a black woman unconditionally through all her mess and uncertainty.

What has surprised you most about becoming a published author?

I was surprised by the way I touched the readers’ lives. When I wrote the first book in the Hart Sisters Series, WITH THIS RING, I received countless emails from plus-sized women telling me that I gave them renewed hope in finding their prince charming. Lately, I’m being told that they love the way Jonathan treated Ivy even though she didn’t always deserve it. They understood all too well why she behaved the way she did and was glad that she finally found true love.

What aspect of writing do you love the best, and which do you hate the most?

I love watching the characters personalities unfold and getting to know them. I hate revisions, but I know they are necessary and at the end appreciate them.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

1. I wish I’d known that for all the rejections I’ve received, that someone would give me a chance to tell my story to the world.

2. I wish I’d known that I could be victorious as a romance author despite all circumstances.

3. I wish I had known the joy I would feel once I completed the work.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

1. Do learn your craft.
2. Don’t ever give up.

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

I wish non-writers would understand that writing is a tough business. The stories take time to take shape and then be executed into an enjoyable story. In doing that you may have to re-write portions several times trying to get it right, just to have the editor remove it. Readers enjoy the stories, and then want the writers to magically come out with something new in the next couple of months. Publishing doesn’t work that way for a lot of us.

When you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a graphic/web designer, so I love creating websites, book covers etc. I work a lot with the media ministry at my church. I’m also a wedding/party planner, so I enjoy putting together special events/occasions.

What do you do to interact with your readers?

For all the readers that are on my email list, I send out holiday e-cards. Respond to them on social networks. Make myself available if asked to participate in a discussion about my books.

Our theme for this month is Resources On The Net. What are your favorite resources on the net.

The internet is very resourceful and I use it for many aspects of my life. When I’m working on graphics, I love to go to: http://sixrevisions.com/ – Six Revisions has a lot of Photoshop tutorials etc.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

I know that the Lord loves me and I’m grateful to him for his mercy towards me.

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

Straight From The Heart - Pub date April 2012. Genesis Press.

Pastry chef Lili Hart hasn’t been satisfied with what she’s accomplished with her siblings at Hearts and Flowers. She yearns for independent success, so she seeks to take on clients of her own not tied to the family business.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Alexandra Kane

A military spouse and mother of two, Alexandra Kane leads a sometimes hectic, always interesting life. Whether watching her husband jump from a perfectly good airplane, chasing the children, or penning her next tale, adventure is never far away. She's been writing since middle school and can't imagine life without it.

How did you start out your writing career?

I've been writing since I was about 11, but didn't begin to take it seriously until around 2003. I've always loved to read, so it seemed natural to want to tell stories like the ones I enjoyed.

What did you learn while writing this book?

That the paranormal side of things can be really fun. I'm a really serious person most of the time, so escaping into fantasy was a lot of fun.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

I wanted to expand my writing to other genres. I already write contemporary/ suspense under the name Kianna Alexander. So I guess you can say I 'm branching out.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

Probably Junjie, the hero. I'm really interested in Asian culture and Junjie is Chinese, so that gave me an excuse to delve into some interesting things about that country and the way they do things.

What has surprised you most about becoming a published author?

Probably the way people say, "I've never met a real writer before!" That kind of tickles me, and I hear it almost every time I tell someone what I do.

What aspect of writing do you love the best, and which do you hate the most?

I love the creation and the research phase, where I can take a really vague idea that I have and expand it into what I hope will be a great story. There are so many different paths an idea can take before it becomes the finished work and I love that journey. I don't really care for the editing, but I know it's got to be done.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

Hmm. I wish I'd known that not all other writers would be supportive. Some can be catty, and some of the non fiction writers look down on romantic fiction. I wish I'd known how long the publishing process can take, because I can be impatient and it's a bit trying for me. I wish I'd known how great it would feel to have your work praised, I got some really great reviews on my Kianna Alexander book and I was so excited I had them laminated, now I'm going to get them framed!

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand? That it is not easy and it takes a lot of time and effort to turn out a finished product that's good! I have had a lot of readers rush me to finish the next book, but I am not going to release my work into the world until I'm satisfied with it.

If you could be a character from any book you've read, who would you be?

Probably Kate Love from Beverly Jenkins' Topaz. She was full of fire and journalistic spirit.

When you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

What it this spare time you speak of? I have two small children and my husband is a soldier, so I have very little time to myself. I like to cross stitch when I can, and I like to look up random articles on Wikipedia. Those random factoids become fodder for my stories.

What do you do to interact with your readers?

I have a Facebook Fan page and most of the interacting happens there. I just don't have time to manage a thousand and one social networks, and the very idea of Twitter turns me off.

Our theme for this month is Writing the book, what advice do you have for staying motivated to complete the book?

Stay away from negative folks. The ones who say you can't, or shouldn't bother to finish your book are not worthy of time you could be using to complete it.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

That God controls everything and I control next to nothing. Hard lesson but I've learned it well.

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

Well, my next book in the PHOENIX Files series is called Embrace the Night. Here's the blurb:

John Groves is a professor of World History in Raleigh by day. But outside the world of academia, he uses his special talents as a telekinetic to fight crime as a member of PHOENIX.

Tatiana Yates owns a beauty shop in downtown Durham. After leaving the hot curlers and shampoo bowl behind, she releases the tigress within, running free in the forests around RTP. And ripping the bad guys a new one as a seasoned PHOENIX operative.

When the two are paired together to solve the mysterious disappearance of priceless artifacts from North Carolina's museums, can they fight their fiery attraction long enough to get the job done?

How can readers get in contact with you? (mail, email, website)

The best way to reach me is by email (I'm kind of an obsessive email checker, ha ha). The address is alexandrakane_1ATyahooDOTcom.

FEATURED AUTHOR: Kristina McMorris

Kristina McMorris lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two sons. Her foray into fiction began in the fall of 2006 as a result of interviewing her grandmother for the biographical section of a self-published cookbook intended as a holiday gift for the family. Inspired by her grandparents' wartime courtship, Kristina penned her first novel, a WWII love story titled Letters from Home. This award-winning debut is scheduled for release in trade paperback from Kensington Books (2-22-11; U.S.) and Avon/HarperCollins (5-5-11; U.K.). Various book club rights have been sold to Reader's Digest and Doubleday, and the film rights are represented by the prestigious Creative Artists Agency of Los Angeles.

Prior to her literary career, Kristina acted in numerous independent films and major motion pictures. She began hosting an Emmy® Award-winning television show at age nine, and most recently served as the six-year host of the WB's weekly program Weddings Portland Style. Adding to her diverse résumé, McMorris is a professional emcee, literary workshop presenter, and former owner of a wedding/event planning business. Her previous writing background includes being a contributing writer for Portland Bride & Groom magazine and ten years of directing public relations for an international conglomerate. A portion of Kristina's sales proceeds from Letters from Home will benefit United Through Reading®, a nonprofit organization that video records deployed U.S. military personnel reading bedtime stories for their children. She is currently working on her next novel. For more, visit www.KristinaMcMorris.com

How did you start out your writing career?

I had been a PR director for many years, specializing in business writing, and occasionally contributed articles to magazines, but I'd never imagined penning a novel. Only because of a Christmas project did this unexpected career come about.

I was in the midst of self-publishing a cookbook for the family, filled with recipes my grandmother had collected and created over several decades, when I decided to interview Grandma Jean for a biographical section. It was then that I learned an astounding fact: She and my late grandfather had gone on merely two dates during World War II before exchanging vows, as their relationship had developed almost entirely through letters. She then retrieved from her closet a gorgeous stack of yellowed pages, all of them sent by the young sailor to his "sweetheart."

Long after our visit, I continued to ponder their courtship, and I found myself wondering how well two people can truly know each other through letters alone. What if those letters weren't entirely truthful? Therein bloomed the idea for my first novel, LETTERS FROM HOME.

What did you learn while writing this book?

That writing a book is hard! :)

Thank goodness I was blissfully ignorant as to what I was getting myself into. Otherwise, no doubt I would have run screaming in the other direction! But, too late to turn back, I gradually learned how to actually write a novel. More importantly, after an overwhelming amount of research and many unforgettable interviews with WWII veterans, I discovered firsthand why they are so aptly dubbed the "Greatest Generation." When it comes to the women and men who served our country on both the battlefront and home front, their heroism is surpassed only by their humility.

What did you hope to accomplish with this book?

When I first began writing the story, my husband and I agreed that even if the novel didn't reach store shelves, it would find a fabulous home on our own bookshelves, compliments of Kinko's. I loved the idea of passing a novel along to my children that one day they could read and enjoy. So aside from now wanting to help spread word about the unsung heroes of this momentous war, I'm most proud of providing my kids with tangible proof of what a person can accomplish through hard work and determination.

Which character did you have the most fun writing about?

The American soldiers, without question! I often joke that I must have been a Midwestern GI in my past life because I enjoy writing their scenes more than any others. From the verbal jousting to the limerick duels, as well as the camaraderie, their narratives and dialogue typically feel effortless to create. Actually, a WWII vet was once kind enough to compliment me on how well I depicted the soldiers' interactions—only then to point out that the female characters weren't quite as believable. After laughing about the remark, which was spot-on in that early draft, I definitely put more effort into the girls of my story.

What has surprised you most about becoming a published author?

Gosh, what hasn't surprised me?!

At the top of the list, I'd have to say the timeline. Outside the industry, people continue to balk upon learning that my debut novel was slated for publication two years ahead of time. Among other elements that continue to intrigue me are cyclical trends in the market, the career challenges faced by even well established authors, the amount of promotion an author is responsible for, and, on the upside, how genuinely supportive fellow writers can be of one another.

What aspect of writing do you love the best, and which do you hate the most?

What I hate? Writing from scratch. Unfortunately, when it comes to craft, the more knowledgeable I've become, the more I've struggled to simply throw unpolished words onto the page. I tell you, it was so much easier to write a novel when I had no idea how clueless I was!

Conversely, what I love the most—even more, I admit, than learning my book has deeply touched someone's heart—are the occasions when, in the midst of editing and tweaking my manuscript, I've happened across a really good sentence, one that makes me think, Wow…I wrote that. Those are the moments that help me through days when I review an entire chapter and think, Please tell me I didn't write that.

What are three things you wish you’d known before you reached where you are now?

1) I wish I'd known how thankful I would ultimately be that the first version of LETTERS FROM HOME wouldn't sell to a publisher. I would have been grateful instead of disappointed at the rejection letters from editors who, as it turned out, did me a huge favor.

2) I wish I'd known that when you realize you and your agent are not the right fit, it's best to part ways rather than let the relationship linger. You will find another agent. You will find the right fit.

3) And I wish I had known from the beginning not to take personally any literary criticism a fellow reader or writer was willing to offer. I would have simply and genuinely thanked them for their time, and given more objective consideration to input that I indeed invited.

Can you give us one do and one don’t for those aspiring to be a writer?

DO believe in your voice. Everyone has one that is uniquely his or hers. You can improve upon grammar and opening sentences and a whole slew of other literary aspects, but take pride in your voice, your perspective on life, so you can share it with others.

DON'T get caught up in the so-called "rules," particularly when they use the word "never." Never use adverbs, never write prologues, never write in first person…never write a WWII story. Creative writing is an art form. Treat the "rules" as a cafeteria line; pick and choose what works for you.

What one thing about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

I wish readers who enjoy nitpicking minor factual errors in novels would keep in mind that what they're reading is fiction. In general, it's meant as entertainment. Although I take great pride in my extensive research efforts, doing my best to honor those who lived through my stories' eras, it's nerve wracking to know there are readers out there who would love nothing more to pounce on an author's labor-of-love.

If you could be a character from any book you've read, who would you be?

I'm embarrassed to say I can't think of a single character I'd like to be, but I can certainly name my favorite character in a novel: Death, the narrator in THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak. He had wit, compassion, and profound insight about human nature.

When you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

As the mother of two young boys, I sadly don't encounter much "spare time" any more. But when I'm not writing, I love watching movies, enjoying wine and cheese, catching up with friends, and spending time with my family. I swear, there is no sound in the world more beautiful than my kids making each other giggle.

What do you do to interact with your readers?

Since my novel provides a nice source of book-club discussions, I've geared pages on my website specifically for their interests. I'm very excited about meeting with reading groups in person, on the phone, or via Skype. And I also welcome readers to submit WWII letters on my website to be posted as part of the collection.

Our theme for this month is Writing the book, what advice do you have for staying motivated to complete the book?

Treat it as a job. Don't wait for the muse to guide you to the keyboard. On days when the words fly across the page, or when typing each syllable is as enjoyable as enduring a root canal, sit in the chair at your scheduled time and write.

Oprah always asks, What do you know for sure?

People should never be judged at a glance. Beneath every permanent scowl or grin, every offensive remark or unyielding belief, is a reason. I've learned firsthand that the curt receptionist might have just lost their child. The elderly passenger you ignore, seated beside you on a plane, was once a young person who has since survived events others can only imagine. He just might tell you about the day he broke an Olympic record, or liberated a concentration camp—if only he was asked. What I know for sure is that we all have a story to tell; we just need to know someone is interested.

Can you give us a sneak peek of your next book?

Given that it's my new shiny toy, I welcome any chance to chat about the next one. BRIDGE OF SCARLET LEAVES is another World War II love story, but completely different from my debut. It's about a Caucasian violinist who secretly elopes with her Japanese-American boyfriend—against societal molds and families' wishes—the night before Pearl Harbor is bombed.

As the half-Japanese daughter of an immigrant father and American mother, I'm very proud of the vastly unknown history I was able to incorporate into the story, as well as the unique perspective of living between cultures.

LETTERS FROM HOME

In the midst of World War II, a Midwestern infantryman falls deeply in love through a
yearlong letter exchange, unaware that the girl he's been writing to isn't the one replying.

Chicago, 1944. Liz Stephens has little interest in attending a USO club dance with her friends Betty and Julia. She doesn't need a flirtation with a lonely serviceman when she's set to marry her childhood sweetheart. Yet something happens the moment Liz glimpses Morgan McClain. They share only a brief conversation—cut short by the soldier's evident interest in Betty—but Liz can't forget him. Thus, when Betty asks her to ghostwrite a letter to Morgan, stationed overseas, Liz reluctantly agrees.

Thousands of miles away, Morgan struggles to adjust to the brutality of war. His letters from "Betty" are a comfort, their soul-baring correspondence a revelation to them both. While Liz is torn by her feelings for a man who doesn't know her true identity, Betty and Julia each become immersed in their own romantic entanglements. And as the war draws to a close, all three will face heart-wrenching choices, painful losses, and the bittersweet joy of new beginnings.

"Ambitious and compelling…[a] sweeping debut" (Publishers Weekly), LETTERS FROM HOME is a story of hope and connection, of sacrifices made in love and war—and the chance encounters that change us forever.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT - A Silken Thread by Brenda Jackson

Erica Sanders has found the man of her dreams. A rising lawyer, Brian Lawson is smart and gorgeous—and the only man who has ever made Erica lose all reason with just a glance. The wedding is just a few weeks away, and the only person who objects to the match is Erica’s imperious, social-climbing mother, Karen. She would prefer that her daughter marry Griffin Hayes, scion of another wealthy Hattersville family—despite the fact that he and Erica, friends since birth, have never felt even a tinge of romance between them. Determined to end the union, Karen hires a private investigator to dig up any dirt she can about Brian—a decision that will have a devastating effect on many people’s lives.

Griffin, meanwhile, has set his sights on his own ideal woman: Erica’s best friend, April North. Born on the wrong side of the tracks in Hattersville, April is now an internationally recognized model, who still clings to family ties in her exclusive hometown. A third romance brews between Erica’s father, Wilson, and Brian’s mother, Rita. Fighting a palpable attraction from the moment they meet at their children’s engagement party, Wilson and Rita succumb to their passion when fate throws them together. Wilson, trapped in a loveless marriage, and Rita, a widow who long ago gave up on love, try to resist this forbidden romance, but discover things about their needs that cannot be denied.

Even as Karen’s efforts to thwart Erica and Brian’s happiness begin to play out according to her plan, secrets from the past surface that threaten the perfect little cocoon that she has constructed from silken threads—at once strong and vulnerable. In the end, only the power of love can prevail. A SILKEN THREAD is a powerful, electrically-charged evocation of romance and passion—vintage writing from one of the most beloved women working in romance fiction today.

"So, tell me. Have wedding jitters taken a toll on you yet?"

Erica Sanders glanced across the table, thinking that only April, her close friend since junior high school, would have the nerve to ask her something like that with a straight face. April North knew her so well. She could tell Erica's anxiety and stress were mounting, only a couple of weeks from the engagement party at which the couple's families would officially meet. Erica was so not looking forward to that affair— unless her mother's attitude changed drastically.

"Yes, I'm a little stressed," she admitted. "My sanity is barely holding up. But it's to be expected of every bride, isn't it?" She figured if anyone should know, surely April would. After all, her best friend had walked down the aisle three times already.

"Umm, a little stress is to be expected of every bride. But in your situation…" April left the words unsaid.

Erica's mother was driving her crazy.

With one breath Karen Sanders would rant and rave about Brian Lawson not being good enough to marry her daughter, and with the next breath she'd give the wedding planner hell because she intended for Erica's wedding to be the social event of the year.

It would be a wedding befitting the great-great-granddaughter of one of the founding fathers of Hattersville, a small town of seven thousand, noted in the history books as one of the first cities for freed blacks in Ohio. Erica had lived in Hattersville all twenty-seven years of her life, except for her college years in Wisconsin. Living in another city those four years had opened her eyes to a lot of things, especially how closed-minded and snobbish some of the residents of her hometown were. But not all of the citizens were privileged. Her friend April had been born on the other side of the tracks, in the Fifth Ward—something Erica's mother liked to remind her of every chance she got. But to Erica, what side of the tracks someone was born on didn't matter, and her close friendship with April had always been special. Besides, April, who had always been a beautiful person, had gone from rags to riches and was now a world-famous model. That proved that anyone who put her heart and mind to it could become successful, despite her humble beginnings.

Needing to escape the oppressive atmosphere of the town even more than Erica did, April had traveled west to attend UCLA, where she'd met husbands one and two. Husband number three, whom she'd divorced a year ago, was someone she'd met in Great Britain.

"You know as well as I do," April continued to say while eating her salad, "that Ms. Karen's idea of a dream marriage is one between you and Griffin."

Erica knew that was true. Griffin Hayes's family, like hers, represented old money in Hattersville. Naturally some people, especially her mother, assumed she and Griffin would grow up and marry. There were those, again namely her mother, who figured that doing such a thing was not only politically correct, but would destroy some curse reputed to have been placed upon the two families that could only be broken by a marriage between them.

Unfortunately, nobody bothered to inform her and Griffin's hearts, since they just weren't feeling it. Their families had thrown them together so often when they were growing up that eventually they began thinking of themselves as sister and brother, rather than as a couple whose lives were destined to end in holy matrimony.

Although they'd tried dating while in high school, the fire was simply not there. Griffin had recognized it and so had she. That was when they'd made the decision to be nothing more than friends.

"Mom might as well get used to the idea that I will not be Mrs. Griffin Hayes," Erica said. "I most certainly have. Trust me. Brian is all the man I want and need." She doubted anyone, even April, knew just how much she meant that.

"Will he be flying in this weekend?"

A huge smile spread across Erica's lips and she held up two crossed fingers. "Let's hope. They've hired two more attorneys at his firm but he still has a large caseload."

She and Brian, an attorney at a prestigious law firm in Dallas, had met last summer while vacationing in Myrtle Beach. He had been out fishing on the pier one morning and she had been jogging along the shoreline. They had struck up a conversation, and he had invited her to breakfast the next day. A few weeks later, they had become lovers.

When the summer ended they decided to keep the affair going and, beating the odds, their long-distance romance had survived. Over the Christmas holidays Brian had asked her to marry him. She had accepted and now looked forward to her August wedding and her move to Texas.

Her mother had been in an uproar at the thought of her only child marrying someone other than a Hayes and moving away. Even now, months later, there were days Karen Sanders had problems coping with the inevitable.

"So how's your dad holding out?" April asked, breaking in on Erica's thoughts. "Has your mom convinced him to disown you yet?"

Erica thought about her dad, with his soft hazel eyes so filled with love and understanding. He had given her his full support—although he kept it low-key so as not to get her mother riled. But it was the little things he would say and do to let her know he admired the fact that she was doing the very thing he hadn't done, marrying for love instead of for the sake of preserving some legacy. It was no secret her parents' marriage had been arranged.

"You know as well as I that won't be happening," she replied. She and her father had a close relationship and things between them would always be that way.

A short while later she and April were walking to their parked cars, promising to get together several more times while April was in town visiting her grandmother. It was the first week of March and there was definitely an Ohio chill in the air, which made Erica tighten her shawl around her shoulders. The shawl, a Giorgio exclusive, had been a birthday gift last year from April.

Up ahead Erica saw the town's square, brightly lit and rimmed by a well-maintained lawn. The parks in the Fifth Ward might look deteriorated and in need of care, but here the statues of the city's forefathers were in perfect condition. It almost sickened her when she thought of the good citizens' priorities.

She glanced at her watch. It wasn't even eight o'clock and already the retail businesses had closed, leaving the area looking like a ghost town. The town had survived what would have been rough economic times when a few wealthy residents had come in and bought out the small, struggling businesses, which made the rich even richer and gave them tighter control and ownership of the town.

Even her job as head librarian and accountant at the town's historical library was nothing more than a cushy position created by her parents—mainly her mother—to assure the history of Hattersville was well preserved. Erica was constantly reminded that if it hadn't been for the forefathers—those free blacks who'd come from Canada—the town wouldn't exist.

For generations there had been a distinct line between the two groups of people living in Hattersville, the haves and the have-nots. Those that had money—the Hayeses, Delberts, Sanderses, Carters, Heards, Bakers, Cobbs and Stonewells— were those who owned major manufacturing corporations that employed thousands of people who drove into the city to work.

After giving April a good-bye hug, Erica slid into her car, a cherry-red Mercedes two-door that had been a birthday gift from her father a couple of years ago. After strapping on her seat belt, she was about to turn the key in the ignition when her cell phone rang. She smiled when she saw the caller was Brian. She wasted no time answering it. "Hi."

"Hi, sweetheart. Where are you?" he asked.

"About to leave Ryder's Steak House. April's in town so we did dinner." She paused a moment and then asked, "So, do you think you can get away for the weekend?"

She heard his chuckle and the sexiness of it carried through the phone. She immediately recalled the first time she'd seen him, shirtless and wearing a pair of cutoff jeans with a fishing pole in his hands. He had given her a flirty smile and she'd turned to mush. She had actually felt that smile in every part of her body, every pore and every single cell. That smile had transformed her into one hot and achy mass and on that day she'd discovered that the whole concept of lust was as real as real could get.

"Yes, I think I can get away," he said, interrupting her thoughts. "By the way, there's something waiting for you at your house."

A smile touched her lips. He had been known to send her thinking-of-you gifts through the mail. "There is?"

"Yes."

She wondered what he'd sent her this time. Last week it was a CD on which he'd recorded "Rock-a-bye Baby" in his deep voice like Barry White's as a way to lull her to sleep each night. "What is it?" she asked.

He gave her another sexy chuckle before simply saying, "Me. And now that you know, don't speed getting here."

How could she not, Erica thought after a quick gasp escaped her lips. They hadn't seen each other in over three weeks and she was filled with a deep longing that she knew would be getting satisfied in a big way when she saw him. Sensual shivers danced up her spine when she envisioned how that would be accomplished.

"Make yourself comfortable until I get there," she told him.

"I've done that already and I can't wait to see you, baby."

She couldn't wait to see him, either. "I'm on my way."

Before Brian could give her a hot response, one that would probably make her detonate, she clicked off the phone, started her engine and pulled out of the parking lot. With Brian in town her plans for the weekend had definitely changed. Everyone would understand.

Everyone but her mother.
