I live on the beautiful tropical island of Barbados which is
known for its shimmering crystal-clear waters and golden sands. I'm a high school teacher who always dreamed
of being a published author. I didn't
know, at that time, what I wanted to write, but following the advice of a few
online author friends, I decided to write romance, a genre, which I read and
enjoyed. In 2003, after winning the Heart & Soul Aspiring Authors' Contest
(at the annual Romance Slam Jam Conference), an editor at the then BET Books,
Demetria Lucas, read and made me an offer.
CAPTURE THE SUNRISE was released in November 2005, as part of a
two-in-one volume, SLOW MOTION. I write
contemporary romance and category romance which features black heroes and
heroines. I've always been an advocate for romance, in particular, romance
which features a black hero and heroine.
I've watched the publishing industry and find the categorizing of the
books, we black authors write, as shades of our past, rooted in slavery and
segregation. We write contemporary, mystery, romantic suspense and in all the
other genres. As far as I know there is
no genre called African-American.

What
would you like readers to take away from your book?
A knowledge of the awesome power of love and the fact that it
is timeless and transcends generations.
What did
you learn while writing this book?
My research into 1960s Barbados and the USA taught me a lot
about the turbulent time period and the Civil Rights Movement,
What did
you hope to accomplish with this book?
I want readers to become more aware of black history and the
strength and resilience of the black race, despite our experiences.
Which
character did you have the most fun writing about?
While Chandra and Joel are my main characters, I became
intrigued by Greg, Joel’s best friend. I
saw a young man who didn’t have Joel’s privileged upbringing, who wanted to do
his part to change the world. Unfortunately, Dr King’s assassination broke his
spirit. I will be exploring in his story, a sequel, PROMISE ME FOREVER.
What do
you believe makes your stories stand out?
I’m not sure, but I hope it is the strong, but vulnerable
heroes I write. Being a male, I hope I have a realistic perception on what
motivate the male psyche.
What do
you do when your book isn’t selling?
I believe that strong marketing is important, but that also
means having the available resources to do it.
Beside
yourself, what male author would you recommend SORMAG readers check out.
Keith Thomas Walker. I love his voice and his books. I was
delighted when he agreed to be part of the Decades: A Journey of
African-America Love Series.. His book, ELECTION DAY, set in the 1970s is an
excellent example of his work.
Who was
the first author you ever met?
Jacqueline Thomas in 2002, when I attended Romance Slam Jam
for the first time. She picked me up at the airport.
How can
we get more young men interested in writing and reading books?
We have to write more books that are written for them about
the things they like and that interest them.
What’s
the most interesting change in your life as a result of being a published
author?
The number of readers and author friends I have met as a
result of attending writer/reader conferences over the years,
What has
surprised you most about being a published author?
The blatant racism which exist in the publishing world,
especially, in the romance genre. Black authors have to fight harder to achieve
the same kind of respect and success as our white counterparts.
What
about writing do you wish non-writers would understand?
That writing is not easy; that it takes years of discipline
and hard work.
Can you
give us one do and one don't for those aspiring to be an author?
Do learn your craft.
Don’t lose your unique voice.
When
you're not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I read a lot and I also watch a lot of television series and
movies.
Oprah
always asks, what do you know for sure?
I know I was born to write.
Any last
words for our readers?
Thank you for your unwavering support, especially, during my
illness.
PROMISE
ME A DREAM
