What would you like readers to take away from your
book?
In Seduced by Second Chances, three of the four main
characters deal with shattering rejection. One presses forward, despite obstacles.
Another is driven by the rejection to prove those who doubted him wrong. And
the third discovers an unexpected path because of the rejection she dealt with
early in life.
As a teenager, I allowed myself to be sidelined by
early rejections of my writing rather than learning the lesson it provided and
moving forward. The advice I would give my younger self is the same thing I
hope readers will take away from this story: We can learn so much from
rejection. So don’t run from it, embrace it.
Which character did you have the most fun writing
about?
In this story, it’s Jessie’s POV I enjoyed most. I
love books, but music is a close second. I’m a huge fan of singer-songwriters
and I enjoy attending concerts. Jessie Humphrey is a singer-songwriter on the
rise, so it was fun writing about her character. Especially the scenes where
she performs on stage. It was also really fun writing the push-pull of the
secondary couple in this story.
What do you believe makes your stories stand out?
The mélange of sexiness, humor, and emotion I try to
pack into each story and the strong, unconventional heroines;
tough-on-the-outside, gooey-in-the-middle heroes; and lots of family drama.
Why romance?
Because writing about love and relationships is so
much fun and it’s something most of us can relate to. I might expand to other
genres, but there will always be a love story in there somewhere.
What do you think the future of AA romances will be?
There have always been plenty of authors writing great
#ownvoices African American romances. Hopefully, with the sustained effort
we’re seeing from black authors who are no longer willing to stay quiet and
play nice, we’ll see more of a push for inclusion in the marketplace. But
getting black romance to the masses has always been a complicated,
multi-pronged problem that requires open-minded cooperation from authors,
editors, publishers, bloggers, media, and readers. I am seeing lots of hopeful signs, like the
growing list of black authors in the Harlequin Desire lineup and all of the
diverse books making a huge splash in the publishing industry. Hopefully, as
publishers realize the monetary potential to a more diverse lineup, we’ll
continue to see more black romance.

What literary event can we find you this year?
My last planned events of the year are the RWA
Conference in New York this month, Lights! Camera! Action! in Raleigh in
August, and the Kaleidoscope Fest in Durham in September.
What’s the most interesting change in your life as a
result of being a published author?
It is a joy and a privilege to be a part of this
incredible community of readers and authors.
What has surprised you most about being a published
author?
The life of an author is nothing like most people
probably imagine. I’m still waiting to be the romance writing equivalent of
Jessica Fletcher. 😉
What about writing do you wish non writers would
understand?
Just because we’re at home all day, it doesn’t mean
we’re not working.
Those cheeky jokes about how I “research” love scenes…I’ve
heard them all before. If you’re not asking Stephen King if he has a murder
room, don’t ask me equivalent questions about writing love scenes or imagine
that I have any less imagination. Please and thank you.
Can you give us one do and one don't for those
aspiring to be an author?
Do read widely in the genre you plan to write in and
in other genres.
Don’t get to the point where you believe you know it
all. Keep growing, keep improving.
When you're not writing, what do you like to do in
your spare time?
Spend time with the husband (usually watching murder
mysteries), enjoying our grandkids, playing games with our extended family, and
attending concerts.
Oprah always asks, what do you know for sure?
What the world needs now, more than ever, is a
stronger sense of empathy. So many people lack the ability to empathize with
people who don’t look like them or have lived a different life experience. As
an author, I take seriously the responsibility to give readers a glimpse into
other cultures and life situations in a way that provides a better
understanding of how other people live.
